Vale - Clyde Lindstrom

We are saddened to report the passing of one of Victoria’s original go karters - Clyde Lindstrom.

Lindstrom passed away yesterday, January 15. He was a former President and founding life member of the Eastern Lions Go Kart Club. He started racing in 1959 and built his first kart in 1961.

Clyde and his three sons were actively involved in the sport ever since, Dean even racing V8 Supercars for a short time. Grant, the proprietor of Pro-Karting in Melbourne, and his sons Jace, Jordie and Adam are all still involved.

Clyde lived through and helped mould the early days of karting in Victoria. His engineering skills were a big advantage and in the 1970s he designed and built some amazing inventions. These included a fuel injection system, two piece rear axle (both of which were subsequently outlawed), a twin with both engines on one side, water cooling an air cooled engine, casting his own pistons and so on.  He had one of the first rotary-valve engines in Australia when he imported a Komet from Italy in the late 1960s and built his own chassis, seats, steering wheels and fuel tanks.

Some of Clyde’s proudest memories were the numerous National and State titles he and his three sons won in karts he had built and tuned. This was particularly so at meetings where they all won trophies. At one of the Victorian State Titles the three Lindstrom boys won the premier senior, junior and sub-junior classes.

Funeral details will be published once known.
