Open Performance Feature Kicks Off Canberra's Race Season

by Mark Gallagher

The Canberra Kart Racing Club kicked off its 2008 season on the 20th January with a great day of racing. With the rain finally clearing and the sun shining, karters took to the Fairbairn Park circuit with approximately 70 entries for the day.

A new class being trialed by the Canberra Club is the Open Performance class. It is aimed at giving those people with karts such as Twins, ICC Gearbox, Rotax DD2, Formula 100 or any other exotic machines a place to race and have some fast fun.

Nigel Davey from Canberra put in some excellent drives to come in 1st overall for the day managing to outpace the two ICC Gearbox karts in his Leopard powered Arrow. The ICC Gearbox drivers found the more powerful karts very challenging to drive with both drivers exhausted at the end of each race (get fitter guys!!!). Mark Gallagher drove well for 2nd overall and first of the gearbox karts home and James Horne put in some very consistent driving to take 3rd overall for the meeting and first Clubman driver.

Bruce Otter from Canberra came on very strong in the final race of the day taking a solid third after finally getting on top of some jetting and technical difficulties with his new ICC kart. This meeting was Bruce’s very first drive in a gearbox kart.

It was great to see some Gearbox karts finally back on the track and it is hoped the numbers will grow as the word spreads and some more karters drag their machines out of the shed.

Stable Karting in Canberra are expecting a delivery of at least three Rotax DD2 karts very soon and the Canberra Kart Club would love to see more people getting into the Open Performance class for a great day of fast racing action.
