Rhys Accepts CAMS 'Future Star' Award

Adelaide student Rhys Newman has been rewarded for his commitment to Motorsport and his 2007 successes by becoming the proud recipient of the inaugural Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS) “Future Star Award”.

rhys newmanThe award was presented by Hon Kate Ellis MP (Federal Minister for Sport, pictured right with Newman ) at the CAMS presentation dinner held at the West Lakes Convention Centre on Saturday 2nd of February. 

“I am extremely proud and very honored to receive this award,” 14 year old Newman told the huge gathering of Motorsport personalities, dignitaries and fellow competitors during his acceptance speech.

Newman’s 2007 Achievements included winning the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport Youth Championship, the South Australian Sprint kart State Championships, the City of Adelaide Titles, the Midget Rookie Junior Challenge, the South Australian Festival State Cup Series and 2nd places in Australian Superkart National Titles and the Victorian Country Series, resulting in 16 podium finishes from 22 events.

Only a few weeks ago Newman was awarded a SASI (South Australian Sports Institute) Talented Athlete Award for 2007/2008 and to cap of a year of “firsts”, local top flight open wheeler organisation Team BRM tested Rhys in a Formula Vee open wheel (single seat open cockpit) race car.

Receiving this award is the culmination of an absolutely sensational 2007 season” said Newman after the ceremony, “I have made no secret of my goal to climb the International Motorsport ladder to the very top.  I feel this award reflects the faith that people who have helped me so far, have in my commitment, which is very rewarding,” he concluded.

Some of the key elements for selection of the award were:

  • must be aged not more than 21 years of age as of 1 January 2007
  • must have achieved outstanding competition results
  • must have aspirations to compete at least at national championship level and preferably international aspirations
  • must be able to demonstrate a professional approach to motor sport

Newman now heads into his eighth year of Motorsport competition.
