Mount Gambier Karting Club Series - Round 2

Great racing conditions for racing on Sunday April 6 as over 50 karters hit the track for round 2 of the Club Championship series. With great support from club members as per usual, it was also good to see drivers travel from other clubs for the meeting.

Rotax Light lined up first and it was Ian Thornley out in front with a clean sweep of the day and continuing his good form within the class. Sean Taylor held off John D’Onghia to grab 2nd, with John in 3rd and Brien Telford in 4th Place.

Twelve midgets were next on the grid as Sam Baker had the pace to take 1st in every heat for the outright victory. Breaking through the pack was Joshua Munn who finished in 2nd place in heat 3 which was enough to get him the points for 2nd overall, while Jordan Mansell took home 3rd

Junior Clubman featured only 2 drivers in Stephanie Munn and Maverick Benson. The 2 drivers still soaked up the track time with Maverick able to hold off Stephanie for 1st place.

New for this year is the Yamaha TAG 100 class which uses a Yamaha 100cc engine featuring a clutch and electric starter.  Out of the 7 starters Christopher Henke had a good day with two firsts and a second place to see him get 1st outright. After a long time of being an official with the club Nick Dankowski is back racing again and his finished the day with 2nd overall. Club legend Jack Cole drove to 3 third places for a 3rd outright.

Senior National was next on the grid with 7 drivers trying to catch John Dankowski. John has been the man to beat in this class for a while, and once again took a clean sweep of the day for 1st outright. Behind John it was a battle between Josh Cram and Glenn Henley, but Josh was able to get the points for 2nd, with Glenn in 3rd place.

Another new addition this year is the Sportsman 125 class. 8 drivers lined up as Ashley Lear collecting 1st in 2 of the 3 heats and an outright win for the day. A tie in points for 2nd as Ian Thornley and Matthew Jennings could not be separated, but  a 2nd place in heats 1 and 3 for Thornley gave him the edge and a 2nd outright. Jennings finished the day in 3rd place, while Craig Moreland took home 4th.

Seven drivers for Junior National which saw the battle between Stephanie Munn and Rhys Devlin continue, and this time it was Stephanie’s time to shine. After a 3rd in heat 1 she pushed hard to take 1st place in heats 2 and 3 giving her 1st outright. Rhys was never far behind but had to settle for 2nd place while Harley Benson was consistent behind the front runners to get 3rd place.

Ashley Lear continued his wining form into Clubman as he took 1st place for the day. Behind him it was Michael Moulton and Kelvin Moreland swapping places with Michael eventually crossing the line for a 2nd outright with Kelvin in 3rd

In the Rookies its hard to stop Jacob Witherow, and while Mitchell Broome did have success in heat 1 he had to settle for 2nd for the day as Jacob took out heats 2 and 3. This left Scott Moreland to take 3rd and Ivan Heenan to 4th

Finally in Rotax Heavies Kelvin Moreland picked up 1st in heats 1 and 2 which were enough to give him 1st overall. Michael Dawe had a consistent day and a win in heat 3 secured 2nd outright for him, while Richard Nunn returned after suffering engine problem last meeting to take home 3rd place.

The next big meeting for the club will be on the 26th and 27th of April, with the Mount Gambier Enduro Festival. The event with see a Midgets enduro of 100 laps, while a TAG 125 class will run 330 laps which will equal 250km. Teams of 2 drivers will have to manage pit stops, refueling, driver changes and safety kart periods to come out on top. After a successful enduro last year its looks set to be bigger and better.
