Across the weekend, the Lismore Kart Club played host to an impressive field in the second round of The Advance Australasia Queensland Rotax Max Challenge.  The second event in the five round series attracted fields of 19 in Rotax Light and 18 in Rotax Heavy.

With some atrocious weather hitting the east coast in the lead up to the weekend it looked like racing may have to be cancelled for the weekend. With some of the drivers and their crew donning their gumboots and doing sunshine dances around the pits, the Gods must have been listening as the sun managed to poke it’s head out for most of practice on Saturday.  Sunday we had some isolated showers but it did not dampen the spirits of those drivers who made the journey to Lismore despite the conditions.

Round Two was run under a qualifying format and there was non-stop action the whole day. Damian Ward in his debut drive in seniors came out firing qualifying for Rotax Light and securing pole for the start of the heats with Tom Williamson in hot pursuit taking grid 2.  In Rotax Heavy William Yarwood set the pace early taking pole, Lane Moore was also a real contender and edged out Matt Brunt to fill grid 2.

Fast and furious finals action dominated both senior classes.  In Rotax Light, Tom Williamson got a great start and opened up an early lead with Damian Ward putting into practice everything he learnt racing in the junior ranks to close the gap. The two standout drives were by Shae Davies who was involved in a couple of early race contacts eventually clearing his way into 3rd position and Damian Ward with an absolutely impressive drive for his first time in a senior feild.  In the end a rock solid drive by Tom Williamson saw him take the chequered flag with Damian Ward 2nd and Shae Davies 3rd.

Rotax Heavy also delivered spirited and thrilling racing.  William Yarwood proved he was the benchmark and wanted that prize money with a clean sweep in the heats and pre final to secure pole for the final. Lane Moore had some hard work to do after being penalised in heat 2 and being moved down the grid 5 places. With a solid drive in the pre final Lane worked his way up to grid 4 for the final and by the end of lap 1 in the final had moved into 2nd  but William had gapped the field and was out of reach. Matt Brunt also put in a solid performance all day ensuring he was at the front of the grid for the final. In the end William Yarwood took the win by the length of the straight, Lane Moore 2nd and Matt Brunt crossing the line in 3rd.

Series co-ordinator Ken Bensley said “It was great to see such a fantastic turn out considering the atrocious weather that had hit the coast in the lead up to the weekend and the support for the Rotax Class.  The racing was edge-of-your-seat and it was really great to see the drivers enjoying themselves, in turn delivering awesome racing action for the supporters and spectators.”

A big thanks to all the drivers and the members of the Lismore Kart Club for a great weekend.
