Hard Way To Earn a Quid

press release

June 14 and 15 had glorious winter weather greeting over 150 competitors to the Albury Wodonga Kart Club track for the City of Wodonga titles, and with $2000 on the line for the highest point scoring junior, the crowd was treated to instant action.

With 21 entries in the Junior National Light class, local favourite Bronson Butcher was a bit too close to the action at the start of the first heat, a slower kart contacting his and sending him spinning off the track with some serious air beneath. Quickly recovering, he showed good speed to make his way back to 5th place.

Again showing good speed in the 2nd heat, Bronson was able to finish 2nd from a start at 17th, but the 3rd heat saw another first corner incident in front that he couldn’t avoid, and by the time he extracted the kart from the grass, the leaders had bolted.

The finals on Sunday were a much more rewarding affair. Starting 4th in the pre final, Bronson took the lead at about half way and eventually the chequered flag, but only after a tense battle with state champion Warren White. Yet another first corner incident in the final, this time saw Warren taken out, and Bronson was able to skip away and take the win.

In between the Junior National Light racing, Bronson was also racing the exciting Junior Clubman. “We had good speed all weekend” said the Kart Equip driver, “but I had a few awkward starts in the heats. And when the entire field is within 3 tenths, it’s a lot harder to regain position”.

The final climaxed with the front 2 karts slowing each other down in the final corners, allowing the next 3 – including Bronson – to close up. It looked like it was going to get a bit messy with any of the 5 karts able to take the chequered flag. National champion Garry Jacobson took the win.
