Martin Says Karting Still His Favourite

AKA press release

john martinQueenslander John Martin has driven some of the best machines in the world of motor racing but he still believes the years he spent racing karts were some of the most enjoyable of his career.

Martin (right), who started his career at the Fitzroy Park Raceway in late 1998, was the lead driver for Team Australia in the A1 Grand Prix team during the 2007/08 season and is this year competing in the British Formula 3 Championship for Raikkonen Robertson Racing.

Following a short stint in junior speedway Martin turned his sights on a career on motorsport after he witnessed an event at the Rockhampton circuit. “I’d been racing speedway for a little while but when I came to a kart meeting in Rockhampton I was instantly hooked on the sport,” said Martin.

“The sport has taught me a lot, mainly in the way of driving techniques and chassis set up principles – many of which I still use to my advantage when racing all around the world today.

“Some of the best races of my career are the ones I had when I was racing karts, everything seems to happen very quickly and because you are so close to the ground it feels as though you’re going twice as fast as you really are.”

Martin, won a State Championship in the ReSa category when the event was last held at the Rockhampton venue.

“The state title I won at Rocky was one of the most memorable races in my career,” said Martin. “Rocky was pretty much my home track and I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on the state championships from the otherside of the world this weekend.”

A total of 402 entries received across 15 categories for this weekend’s Queensland State Karting Championships presented by Smart City Vocational College.

Practice will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday with qualifying on Friday followed by the heat races on Saturday and Championship Finals on Sunday.
