Tomorrow's Stars Lead The Way Towards WA State Championships

AKA press release

Some of Australia’s youngest kart racers will lead the charge when the 2008 Smarter Than Smoking Western Australian Karting Championships are held at the Hurricane Karting Club in Wundowie next month (October 3-5).

A total of 269 entries have been received across 16 categories for the championships with the largest number of competitors being in the Midgets, for drivers between seven and ten years of age.

These youngsters will reach speeds in excess of 80 km/h as they not only battle to become the state champion in the class for 2008 but also learn valuable lessons about car control and driving techniques – well before they are old enough to obtain their road licence.

At the championships, to be held over the October long weekend, no less than 26 youngsters will line up in the Midgets category. Almost half of the field claim the Wundowie circuit as their home track and a large contingent of drivers is heading up from Bunbury along with a number from other parts of the state.

Also competing in the Midgets category will be two of the country’s leading youngsters, Jake Dixon (above, pic by Budd) from Victoria and Joshua Buggy from New South Wales.

Highlighting the fact that the sport of karting isn’t just for the boys, there will be a number of female competitors in action on the track. Two such drivers are Allira Patrizi and Rebecca Taylor who will compete in the elite Junior Clubman category.

Patrizi, who hails from Kalgoorlie, is the younger cousin of V8 Supercar driver Michael Patrizi who drives for the Ausdrill-backed Ford Rising Stars Racing outfit in the V8 Supercar Championship.

In the Senior categories some of the drivers expected to figure prominently include local drivers Brad Fitch, Shannon Pearce, Jayme Light and BD Soutar-Dawson, who is the defending Champion in the Clubman Light category.
