Following the success of the 2008 Program CAMS, along with Aussie Racing Cars, has announced that up to two vehicles are available for its 2009 Program. The drivers will need to make a financial contribution towards their involvement in the program, but this amount is significantly less than what would normally be required to enter this level of competition.

The CAMS Aussie Young Gun will be allocated a vehicle in this category, liveried with a special design and CAMS branding; including scheduled maintenance, pre-race preparation, transportation, technical race assistance, track support, availability of spare engines and spare parts at the track, and emergency crash repairs performed at the race track.

Drivers will also have the opportunity to be considered for participation in the CAMS Australian Institute of Sport Development Program. As a further enhancement to the 2009 Program, a prominent V8 Supercar Championship Series Driver will be a Mentor for the CAMS Aussie Young Gun drivers.

The driver selection and development will be administered through the existing CAMS Sports Development Programs and is the responsibility of CAMS.

"The program is intended to be used as a potential pathway for drivers to progress to higher levels of the sport, with a particular focus on developing skills for aspiring Touring Car drivers and is an ideal opportunity for a young driver elevating from karting into circuit racing," said Aussie Racing Cars Category Manager Phil Ward.

In announcing the 2009 program CAMS CEO Graham Fountain said, “This is a clear demonstration of our commitment, in partnership with Aussie Racing Cars, to proactively advance young drivers.

“The program provides the selected drivers with a chance to enter into the sport at a significantly reduced cost than would otherwise be required, while at the same time providing them with a terrific opportunity to advance their skills within the CAMS Sport Development Programs.

“As we have seen by the advancement of the 2008 CAMS Aussie Young Gun driver David Whitmore moving into the CAMS Rising Star program in 2009, this is a terrific stepping stone for drivers in their developmental pathway. CAMS, in close partnership with AMSF, remains committed to establishing these development programs in the overall interests of the sport.”

Applications for the CAMS Aussie Young Gun program are now open and will close 15 October 2008. Applications should be addressed to: aussieyounggun@cams.com.au
