TOOWOOMBA'S NELSON IN SIZZLING FORM DURING QUALIFYING IN PORT MACQUARIE

Queensland teenager Brendan Nelson was in sizzling form during the qualifying for the New South Wales Karting Championships sponsored by PDL Electrical in Port Macquarie today.

Nelson, who hails from Queensland’s Garden City of Toowoomba, upstaged many of his more fancied rivals in the highly competitive Clubman Heavy category. His feat was even more impressive considering the fact that the 29-driver field includes no less than seven current or former National Champions.

“It’s my first time here at Port Macquarie and this track is growing on me,” said Nelson.

“I wasn’t fast straight away, but we worked at it and now we’re on the pace and the kart is working well.

“I’ve got Australian champions all around me in both classes, so the competition is super-tough. I’ve got four state titles to my name so it would be fantastic to add at least one more this weekend.

“I haven’t been in top form so far this season. I’ve been close, but haven’t been able to run right at the front. It’s good to have such a strong start to things this weekend.”

Victorian Jason Pringle and Sydney’s Jason Hryniuk qualified second and third fastest ahead of fellow New South Welshmen Daniel Baker and Greg Turner. Current Australian Champion Shayne Piper set the ninth fastest time.

Nelson backed his fastest qualifying effort in Clubman Heavy up by posting the second fastest qualifying time in the 125cc Leopard Light category.

New South Wales driver James Kovacic has been one of the stand out competitors in the junior ranks over the past few years and he continued this form during qualifying for his home state title today.

The current National Champion set the pace in the elite junior category, Junior Clubman, with a blistering time of 45.223 seconds around the 1052-metre Pacific Park Kart Racing Circuit.

Qualifying second fastest in the Junior Clubman category was Max Johnston ahead of Victorian Garry Jacobson, Gold Coaster Chris Hays and Toowoomba’s Tyler Greenbury.

The opening round of heats will be held this afternoon before continuing tomorrow morning followed by the Pre-Finals in the afternoon. The Championship Finals will be held on Sunday.
