BD & Sutherland Double Up

AKA press release

Local drivers BD Soutar-Dawson and Lewis Sutherland have doubled up during the Smarter Than Smoking Western Australian Karting Championships held at the Wundowie Circuit near Perth last weekend.

Soutar-Dawson took out both the Clubman Light and Leopard Light categories while Sutherland cemented himself as the state’s top junior driver with victories in both the Junior National Heavy and Junior Clubman categories.

After qualifying fastest, Soutar-Dawson had a battle on his hands with challenges coming from Bryce Moore, Jayme Light and Paul Nunn including during the heat races in Clubman Light.

With his pace seemingly getting quicker the longer the races went, Soutar-Dawson showed superior speed in the final to hold on for back-to-back championships. Moore claimed second ahead of Paul Nunn.

The Victoria Park (Perth, WA) driver’s campaign in Leopard Light got off to a shaky start after he was involved in an incident during the opening heat race with fellow front-runners Adam Garnaut, Brad Fitch and Lloyd Billick.

Despite his opening heat DNF, Soutar-Dawson made his way to a front row starting spot for the championship final by virtue of a second placing in the pre-final behind Garnaut.

Soutar-Dawson got the jump in the early laps of the final and as his opposition battled for the minor spots he extended his lead before crossing the line clear of second placed Fitch. Ex-pat Queenslander Zac Schonberger, who is now residing in Perth, claimed third spot.

Sutherland reaffirmed his position as the leading junior driver in the state by claiming victories in both the Junior National Heavy and Junior Clubman categories.

Adam Marjoram appeared to be able to match Sutherland for outright speed but Sutherland got the jump early in the final and Marjoram was unable to bridge the gap leaving him to settle for second spot in Junior Clubman.

Marjoram went one better in the Junior National Light category to win ahead of Blake Stanton and Brendon Hope.

The podium in Sportsman 100 (Clubman) Heavy was an all Monaco affair with Lloyd Billick taking the win ahead of Brad Fitch and Kip Foster. After failing to finish the pre-final Lewis Shugar was the hard charger from the back of the field to claim fifth spot behind Shannon Pearce, who was driving an Arrow kart for the first time.

The racing in the classes for the youngest competitors, the Midgets and Rookies categories, was simply breathtaking all weekend long.

New South Wales driver Joshua Buggy got the better of a race long battle with Victorian Jake Dixon and Bunbury’s Jake Wright to take out the Midgets title. Dixon finished second ahead of Thomas Sparkes.

In the Rookies category it was Jesse Elliott who was victorious ahead of defending champion Jake Klarich and Jason Lecocq.
