Preview: Gold Coast 12 Hour

Australia’s only Endurance Kart event on a street circuit, the annual Gold Coast Endurance Kart 12 Hour, is set to be played out this weekend (October 18 and 19) at Parklands, just North of the Gold Coast in Queensland, under both day and night conditions.

20 plus teams, consisting of between two to three drivers per team, have been entered into this year’s Gold Coast 12 Hour, which is the latest rounds of the Powered by Honda ProKart Australia National, Queensland (final round), New South Wales Championships, and the field is certainly wide open.

Amongst the 20 plus teams contesting this year’s Gold Coast 12 Hour, there is any number of potential winners, with the likes of the DQ International, Adrenalin Rush Karting, and Wollongong City Raceway Jets teams, as the leading contenders.

The race format of the Gold Coast 12 Hour is very different from previous years, with the event broken up into three different races, which is to see a 3 Hour and a 6 Hour on Saturday, and another 3 Hour on Sunday morning.

This year’s winner of the Gold Coast 12 Hour, which is to be held under a Lemans start where the drivers are to run to their karts, is to be decided by the winner of Sunday’s 3 Hour, as the three sections are to be judged by a timing system. For example, the winner of Saturday’s 3 Hour will then have their winning margin added to the 6 Hour race, and then the winning margin will be added for the final 3 Hour on Sunday and the winner of that race is to be declared the Street Race National Champion.

Like previous year’s, the Gold Coast 12 Hour is certainly an action packed event and the biggest event on the calendar for the Powered by Honda ProKart Australia Endurance Kart Championship and this year is sure to be no different.

One of the major attractions to this year’s Gold Coast 12 Hour is the non-stop of Endurance Kart racing action, and this year’s new race format that is sure to add more spice.

Supporting the Gold Coast 12 Hour this weekend is the Sprint Go Karts, with classes consisting of Clubman, TAG, National Light, and Rotax. The race format is practice and qualifying sessions and the opening race on Saturday, and both race two and three, the pre final, and final on the Sunday at the completion of the Gold Coast 12 Hour event.

So there is certainly going to be Endurance Kart and Sprint Kart action galore on the streets of the Gold Coast this weekend.

The Gold Coast 12 Hour event is the first event on the Gold Coast Indy program for 2008.

On track action on both days commences at 8am, and the 6 Hour part of the Gold Coast 12 Hour is to start in the afternoon on Saturday and then go into the night. Without a doubt, Go Karting is very exciting under lights, and it certainly brings some different challenges to all drivers in the night time conditions.

The Parklands track is located on the corner of Smith Street and Parklands Drive in Parklands, just 8kms North of Gold Coast.
