Orcic Up Front In Germany

press release

Canadian pilot Phillip Orcic traveled to Europe for the final round in the German Open Championship at the Michael Schumacher owned Kerpen Kart Circuit in Germany. The talented junior pilot overcame some late race engine issues to garner another top ten result after running third for the majority of the event.

Competing in the ultra competitive KF3 division, Orcic was one of the quickest drivers throughout Friday’s testing sessions. Scattered in and amongst the top five, Orcic and his Mach 1 Karting crew were eagerly anticipating Saturday morning’s qualifying session.

Looking to score the prestigious Memorial Cup that goes to the victor of the event, Orcic set out on his qualifying lap where a loose kart condition would catch him off guard. With the majority of the drivers complaining of too much grip, Orcic was the opposite, as the rear of the kart would slide on the exit of most corners.

“It was a little disappointing to qualify in 17th,” explained Phillip after arriving back to his British Columbia home. “I knew that with a little work, we could move forward and I was anticipating running at the front of the field.”

With the two heat race format, Orcic would line up on the inside of the ninth row on both occasions as he looked to move forward. Concentrating on his race starts and staying out of trouble, the talented Canadian pilot claimed tenth and twelfth place finishes to score a solid outside row six starting position for the prefinal.

With the intense on track battles, Orcic began to move forward in the prefinal before being involved in a mid race incident that sent him spiraling down the running order. Circuiting the Kerpen facility just inside the top twenty, the Mach 1 pilot put his head down and never gave up as he battled back up to the twelfth position while turning lap times comparable to the lead group.

Starting outside row six for the final, Orcic moved forward and was quickly inside the top five. Continuing to pick off karts at an incredible pace, Orcic moved to the third position and held that spot until lap fifteen when his motor started to loose power. Looking to salvage a top five result, Orcic began to do everything possible to get his powerplant back up to speed but ran out of time as he crossed the stripe in P8

“The competition in Germany is very tough,” expressed Phillip Orcic after the event. “I know we could have possibly won this race or even podium so finishing in eighth is very disappointing to me.”

Phillip Orcic will now shift his focus and begin preparation for the Rotax World Finals in November. With the event taking place at the La Conca International Circuit in Muro, Leccese, Italy, Orcic will look to turn his hard work into a victory in Italy.

Orlado Racing and Phillip Orcic would like to thank the Mach 1 Kart Factory Team, factory mechanic Renzo Gasch and Helmut Sanden.
