Mason On The Money

press release

British racer Matt Mason ended his national karting season with another outstanding result when he took a hard-fought third place in damp and gloomy weather conditions at Three Sisters, near Wigan.

Last month Matt took his first major win in the Stars of Tomorrow championship after only two years of racing, giving him fourth overall in that national championship, and now with another podium position he has finished eighth overall in the equally competitive Super One national series.

This weekend, as well as having the weather to contend with, he was also on his first meeting at Three Sisters’ Valley circuit, which also used for car racing and is widely believed to be one of the toughest in the country.

To start the race day, Matt finished 13th in his first heat in the Junior Rotax Max formula on Sunday morning but he soon got the hang of it and finished the morning with two fourth places in the other two qualifying heats.

In the final Matt started seventh and made up two places on the first corner after a hectic restart when he avoided the usual carnage, then took second on lap two. With seven laps out of 16 left to go Ed Brand passed him at the end of the straight, and Matt took the opportunity to learn from Brand’s experience in the places he was faster.

“I pushed harder in various places, altering my braking and lines to stick with him, which I did until the flag. I went for the move on the last corner as he only half-defended, but in the greasy conditions the move was impossible to pull off and it was side-by-side going to the flag and I lost of by three hundredths of a second,” said Matt after the race.

“I was thrilled with third at the Super One, at a track layout that I’d never driven before, and starting seventh ahead of the top guys,” he added.

The winner, Joe Reilly, disappeared into the distance after the crashes at the start, and Matt caught him slightly towards the end but the gap was too great to get anywhere near him.

“As usual I’d like to give a huge thanks to Tim Parrott Motorsport for helping me achieve third place – my first podium in Super One, and to take a top ten position in the championship [out of 47] after all my bad luck at the beginning of the season, and my mechanic Tom Arme who has been great! Neil Berryman and JSR on the data-logging and the carburettor also deserve a special mention”
