Superkart Working Group - Progress Update

press release

The SWG has been working hard on your (superkart member's) behalf since our appointment in September.

The biggest initiative has been a change in the way the SWG will interact with the superkart community.

In the past, each member needed to interact with the SWG through their clubs. It was apparent that the majority of club members did not participate in club matters, other than to turn up and drive at race meetings. This meant that the direction of the sport was generally driven by a minority of members.

The SWG's new initiative has been to move the communication channels away from the clubs and to the internet. To that end we have established a web site that will keep you constantly informed of current matters and allow you to participate in steering superkarting into the future from the comfort of your lounge chair.

We will advise you shortly of the new web site address.

On an urgent note we are working hard to implement many items outstanding from the old SWG and also tidy up the STR's in general with clearer definitions and rules. Our goal is to have these in place for the start of 2009.

One agenda item we need urgent feedback on, relates to weights in 125 NGB. The question is; Should we increase the weight minimum's in each class by 5 kg.

Proposal
Junior 150
Senior Light 165
Senior Heavy 185

This would also see the maximum kart weight for heavy division go to 105 kg.

It has also been suggested that 40+ year old light drivers would be exempt from this maximum heavy division kart weight restriction, allowing older drivers that have managed to stay slim, trim and terrific into middle age, to weigh up to heavy division, so they can play with their mates.

Rationale
AKA weights are 160 and 180, but when you add a faring, bigger number plates, rain light etc you add at least 5 kilos. In addition the population is getting heavier and in fact the AKA is currently discussing raising their weights by 5kg and they don't have to contend with the 5kg superkart parts added.

The SWG is meeting again next Tuesday the 28th October and the '125 NGB weight agenda' is scheduled for discussion. Any feedback prior to Tuesday will be read by all SWG members prior to the meeting.

Please forward your views and opinions by email to swg-info@superkart.org.au Include your real name and class you race in. We look forward to your response.

As soon as practical, after the meeting next Tuesday, we will be posting on the new SWG web site, the complete draft of the proposed 2009 STR"s for your comments and opinions.
