Victorians Dominate At Tasmanian Championships

AKA press release

The visiting Victorian drivers showed tremendous class to dominate proceedings during the Tasmanian State Karting Championships at the HARDINGS HOTMIX Kartway in Highclere (near Burnie) last weekend.

Of the 13 categories contested over the weekend Victorian drivers have taken nine championships with them back across Bass Strait.

Leading the charge for the visiting drivers was Goulburn Valley driver Garry Jacobson. Having already won four state championships throughout 2008 the teenager added another two crowns to his ever-growing list of achievements over the weekend.

Jacobson claimed the win in the Junior Clubman category ahead of a fast-finishing Chris Hays. Hays, who was born in Launceston, was one of Jacobson’s biggest challengers during the heat races but an opening lap incident in the Pre-Final forced him to start from the rear of the grid in the all-important Championship Final.

The second-generation racer showed tremendous speed to charge through the field before crossing the line one kart-length behind Jacobson. It is the third-time this year that Hays has finished as the bridesmaid in a state championship. Luke Rochford finished a distant third, narrowly ahead of Joshua Burdon.

While he may have been pressured on his way to victory in the Junior Clubman class, the same couldn’t be said for Jacobson when he continued his winning ways in Junior National Heavy.

After starting from pole position Jacobson simply drove off into the distance to claim the victory by a massive 11 seconds over Andrew Rae. Launceston driver Troy Stone finished third.

Local Burnie driver Brody Appleby was one of three Tasmanian drivers who won their class over the weekend.

Appleby took out the Rookies category, for drivers aged between 10 and 12 years of age, ahead of Queenslander Mitchell Griffin, who has spent the majority of the year racing in America. Victorian Damon Strongman crossed the line in third position.

Joining Appleby in the winner’s circle was Launceston driver Jonathan Males in the Senior National Heavy category and Hobart driver Stephen Crocker in the Over 40’s category.

Other victories over the weekend went to Victorians Jake Klein (Midgets), Jordan Nicolaou (Junior National Light), Jye O’Keefe (Clubman Light), Franky Costanzo (Clubman Heavy), Anthony Capitano (Clubman Super Heavy), Dean Foster (Leopard Light) and Rick Pringle (Rotax Heavy). Canberra’s Ryan Reynolds took out the Senior National Light category.
