Karting Decisions of the World Motor Sport Council

press release

At their meetings on 5 and 7 November 2008 in Paris, the World Motor Sport Council of the FIA and/or the General Assembly of the FIA took in particular the following decisions regarding Karting:

Commission Internationale de Karting-FIA
On proposal of the World Motor Sport Council, the FIA General Assembly has designated the President and the members of the CIK for the coming year.

Mr Luigi Macaluso (I) has been reappointed President of the CIK and the following countries will be represented within the Commission: Argentina, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United States of America and Venezuela.

Sporting Regulations
It has been decided to readjust eligibility criteria for the different categories of the CIK-FIA Championships by aligning them on those of non-championship international events, while introducing requirements with regard to safety and Drivers’ experience. From 2009, «B» licence- holders who are at least 16 years old will have access to the KF1 category in all CIK-FIA Championships concerned, and «C-Senior» licence-holders will have access to the KF2, KZ2 and ICC-Sudam Sr CIK-FIA Championships.

With regard to rolling starts, it has been decided to clarify the penalties for driving out of the start corridor before the lights have been switched off (penalty of 3 seconds for partly crossing the corridor and of 10 seconds for completely getting out of the corridor), and the penalties for overspeeding during the approach to the start line (penalty of 1 second per extra km/h, with a maximum penalty of 10 seconds).

Within the framework of the CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship, a drive-through penalty may be imposed during the Races on Drivers who fail to respect the starting procedure, who overspeed in the Pit Lane or cross a line. This procedure is made possible by the use of automobile tracks for this Championship.

Miscellaneous
Total has won the tender to be the single fuel supplier for the 2009 CIK-FIA World Karting Championship and all the 2009 Championships organised on the European continent, with the exception of the CIK-FIA Viking Trophy and of the CIK-FIA European Superkart Championship.

Further to a joint and well-founded application from the ASNs of the Netherlands, Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, a Benelux Zone for Karting will be created in 2009 as two out of these three countries see the development of their sporting activities reduced as a result of the closure of several permanent circuits.
