Adam Hughes wins F100 Nationals

press release

MKC team driver Adam Hughes won the 2008 Formula 100 National Championships at the Geelong circuit last weekend.  Adam drove his Kosmic T11 kart powered by TM engines to lead the field from start to finish in the 21 lap event, after being on the pace all weekend.  Adam qualified 2nd on Friday had a fairly uneventful charge through the heats to be placed on grid two for the all important final.  The outside pole starting position was going to be tough for Adam though, pre-final winner Aaron Ivermee on pole and one of Australia's best karters David Sera following Aaron in 3rd grid spot.

At the start Adam got a flyer and was able to head into turn one in the lead.  Things went badly wrong for Dave Sera and 2007 Champion Jason Burns as they were caught up in a crash that ended their race.  From there on it was a culculated drive from Adam who set about building a handy gap.  He pulled away by a tenth of a second here and a couple of tenths there to get clear of the fast charging Danny Richert and Gillard driver Hayden McBride.

But no-one was going to catchy "Hughesy" on this day as he built a lead of over 2 seconds and kept his cool behind the wheel.  In fact Adam's head mechanic Josh Brooker seemed far more nervous than his driver as he yelled at Hughes to "Choke it!" as he passed the grandstand in the final laps.  And then the chequred flag appeared and after 21 laps Adam Hughes was the new National Champion!

This was a really popular win for one of the good-guys of karting and showed the real talent Adam has.  As MKC Team Manager Roger Polak commented; "People have sometimes said that Adam is one of the most under-rated drivers in Australia, but he wasn't to us.  We knew Hughesy had the goods to win at the highest level and he's shown that here again today."

After the race Adam said; "“This win has definitely made 2008 my best year in karting ever and I can't wait to bolt the green plate to the kart!"

Adam's win has topped off a great year for himself and fellow MKC Kosmic driver James Sera who have both won a green plates driving Kosmic T11 karts this year.  Adam  finished 2nd at the Leopard Challenge world final last week in Spain and also scored 2nd place at the Victorian Open also held at Geelong earlier this year.

Adam would like to thank Melbourne Kart Centre, Karl Bond from Kartune Engines, Remo Racing, his parents Jenny and Ian, mechanic Josh Brooker, his girlfriend Leah, Super 1 Karting and race organiser Dom Albanese for getting him onto the podium's top step.
