Aussie Karter Wins In America

AKA press release

Victorian kart racer David Sera has once again proven why he is considered one of the top young drivers in the world with a dominant performance during the opening round of the 11th Annual Florida Winter Tour aboard an Australian-made Arrow Kart in America over the weekend.

Sera, 20, flew to America two weeks ago before dominating a lead up race in Daytona and winning the 125cc Rotax division at the Florida event, which was held at the Homestead Raceway in Miami and attended by a record number of drivers.

Such was the high level of competition in the field, Sera was competing against no less than five fellow drivers who he had raced against at the World Rotax Challenge in Italy last November.

“It was a great event, I’m delighted to have done myself, Arrow Karts and every Australian karter proud by showing that we can take on the best and win,” said Sera.

“There was some really good competition, I raced against about five of the guys in this weekend’s field at the World Rotax Final in Italy last year and there was probably about another ten who were very fast as well.

“The track was different to what we race on in Australia, it was a temporary circuit – which took a little bit to get used to – but it was very fast and enjoyable.”

Unfortunately for Sera he will be forced to miss the second round of the Winter Tour as it clashes with the Victorian Championships (to be held in Puckapunyal on February 13 -15).

“I would love to come back and compete in all three rounds but at this stage my Australian commitments have to come first,” said Sera.

“Apparently the guy who won the Tour last year missed a round, so depending on how the results go in round two I may end up racing at the final round.”

Finishing second behind Sera in Sunday’s final race was Gabriel Chaves. Canadian Marco Di Leo, who finished runner-up to Sera in Daytona, claimed third place ahead of fellow Canadian Pier-Luc Ouelette, who was victorious in the 2007 Rotax Grand Finals and finished runner-up in 2008.

Also competing last weekend in Florida was ex-Formula One and NASCAR turned Sports Car driver Max Papis. The Italian took out the Masters division. (Papis has also raced karts in Australia, competing for Franco's PCR team at the Castrol International in the late 80s - MW)
