Hutton Wins CIK Trophy of New Zealand

press release

Debuting his new UTi Tony Kart EVR, 13-year-old King’s College, Auckland, student Arie Hutton put on a dominant performance in +40C heat to win the Junior (KF3/JICA) class at the annual CIK Trophy of New Zealand.

This year’s event was contested at the Hawkes Bay Kart Club’s ZM-FM Raceway near Hastings on 6-8 February and witnessed the first championship win for a new KF Series engine in NZ.

Commenting on the event Arie said, "A big thanks to dad and Darren Biggs for spending all day Thursday building up my new Tony Kart EVR chassis which turned its first laps at lunchtime on Friday. The chassis immediately felt similar to the works chassis I drove in Macau last year. We were about 3/10ths slower than the quick JICA’s on Friday which is about where we expected to be considering the 10kg weight difference.

"A good night’s sleep and new tyres on Saturday morning brought us closer to Chris Cox who grabbed pole. In each of the Heats I slipped back to 3rd at the start from the outside row, but the more laps we did the stronger the chassis performed and I managed to win the first two Heats and then conserve the kart in Heat 3.

"The start of the Pre Final was interesting as we all tried to out fox each other. I won the start but Chris went by on lap 2 however I managed to regain the lead on lap 4 and slowly pull away.

"The 35 lap Final was the longest race I have ever done (19 minutes 21 seconds) and in the hottest conditions. Chris was right behind for the first 10 laps until my kart came on. I was then able to slowly pull away. Unfortunately for Chris his engine failed on lap 19. Despite having well over 4 hours on the piston the water cooled KF3 seemed to do the distance better than the air cooled JICA’s.

"Finally a big thanks to Stuart Park for all his work in helping adjust the chassis during the event and preparing the engine and carburettors."
