Guiliana Wins BMW Scholarship For 2009 Season

Australia’s motorsport talent is as strong as ever with rising star, 17 year old, Steel Guiliana successfully winning a coveted Formula BMW Pacific Scholarship for the 2009 season.

Guiliana who resides on the New South Wales Central Coast has dreamt of becoming a Formula 1 World Champion since a child. “This opportunity that BMW have presented to me is a once in a life time offer that I cannot refuse. This is my first but essential step towards my goal” explained Steel, soon after receiving confirmation of his scholarship.
 
Since turning 13, Steel has been competing in the European Karting Championship. 2006 really showed that Guiliana is a special driving talent and the one to watch for the future when:-

  • He won the highly competitive Italian Championship,
  • Finishing an amazing 2nd in the European Championship,
  • Fastest qualifier as well as winning  the heats and prefinal at the Australian Championship and
  • Finally, a very credible 10th place at the World Championships in Portugal having started last (34th) after a bout of troubles in the Prefinal.

After proving himself as a world class kart racer, it was time to move up to the next level, Formula BMW, the Formula 1 proving ground for rookies.

The Formula BMW series started in 2002 in Germany, now having expanded to the Pacific and US regions. In December 2008 Steel entered the Scholarship trials at the Formula BMW Racing Centre in Sepang, the home of the Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix.

After 2 days of thorough examination from BMW instructors, Steel was awarded the €50,000 Euro Scholarship as a BMW Junior in addition to receiving driver coaching, media and fitness training as supporting benefits.

The first round is in support of the Malaysian Formula 1 Grand Prix in early April. The remaining 5 rounds are held across Asia over 2009 which include the Formula 1 night race in Singapore and the famous Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix.
