After many years of planning by the Townsville Kart Club there is now only days to go before the most prestigious event in the history of the club takes to the track – the 47th National Sprint Kart Championships sponsored by Yamaha.

Cairns racer Lydon Dodge is aiming for the top in Clubman Light while Hayden Stephensen has been a member of the club for 17 years and he believes this is his best crack at a National Crown.

With six Australian titles already to his name Remo Luciani is one of Australia's most successful kart races and he is aiming to turn his experience into a victory when he takes on the best Clubman Heavy drivers, if successful it will be his first National crown since 1995.

Qualifying for the Championships at Townsville’s Sun City Raceway will be held on Friday April 10 with heat races to be contested on Saturday April 11 followed by the Championship Finals on Sunday April 12.

DODGE IS EYEING OFF THE NATIONAL CROWN
If it has got an engine and wheels then Cairns’ Lydon Dodge is interested in it – if not, forget about it.

The 22-year-old has been around motorsport for as long as he can remember and less than two weeks time he will be competing in the biggest karting event of his career, the 47th National Sprint Kart Championships sponsored by Yamaha in Townsville.

The National Championships has attracted almost 300 competitors from every region of the country and Dodge is aiming for the top in his fourth attempt at a National crown.

“The National Championships is the pinnacle of karting in Australia, you have got the best of the best from everywhere coming to try and be number one,” said Dodge.

KARTING NATIONALS IS A FAMILY AFFAIR FOR THE STEPHENSENS
As the National Karting Championships get closer by the day the Stephensen household has a similar feel to a home with two young children at Christmas time.

For 24 year-old Hayden Stephensen the 47th National Sprint Kart Championships sponsored by Yamaha is his big shot at claiming the Australian Championship as the best from across the country are coming to ‘his’ track for Australia’s biggest karting event of the year on April 10 – 12.

His Father Brian has spent hundreds of hours over the past few months preparing the venue for the Event and will be Hayden’s mechanic at the Championships while his Mother Wendy Smith will be working in an official capacity.

Stephensen followed his Father, a former drag, speedway and kart racer, into motorsport and has been racing at the Townsville Kart Club for the past 17 years and has raced in a variety of categories throughout these years.

REMO IS READY TO TAKE ON THE YOUNG GUNS IN TOWNSVILLE
Australian karting stalwart Remo Luciani may well be the oldest competitor in his category at the 47th National Sprint Kart Championships sponsored by Yamaha but he believes that he has still got what it takes to take on and defeat the best.

The 48-year-old Horsham businessman is competing in his 22nd National Championship in Townsville at Easter time, including an impressive 19 in succession, in search of his seventh Australian Championship.

Luciani, who started his karting career aboard a Victa-powered kart on a dirt track in 1981, secured his first National crown in 1991 at Geelong in Victoria. During his career he has grown into one of the most successful Australian karters of all time with 48 State Championships to his name.
