Townsville Track To Be Shut Down?

The Townsville Kart Club's facility is in danger of being closed down to make way for residential development.

A Planning Committee within the local Council has approved re-zoning of adjacent land. This will open the way for a 347ha, 2,200 home residential project to be approved by a full meeting of council later this month. A proposed Motorsport Complex and Driver Education Centre are also in danger of being canned.

Apparently, the owner of the adjacent land to the kart circuit tried to buy the track several years ago and relocate the club - to a site that was 50 minutes out of town...

According to the club's website, they have not been officially informed of the proposed changes that will directly affect them. The Gold Coast Club was forced out of their track due to housing development and there is real danger this could happen in Townsville.

The club is ready to fight to keep the track and is asking members to voice their concerns to council and the media.

Above: The Townsville kart circuit sits on Shaw Road. The red area, including the dragstrip, indicates the area owned by a developer. If this turns into houses, most residents wont like the karts buzzing around next door. And, despite buying into the area knowing what's already there, we all know what happens next...
