Chelsea Holman Claims Victory in Young Guns Go Kart Title

press release

After finishing third in her very first 'Young Guns' Go Kart Title last year; North Queensland's Chelsea Holman was determined to return to the event this year and challenge for victory and last weekend at Lismore Kart Track in Northern NSW that was exactly what she did.

In what was both a calculated and aggressive drive, the 15-year-old from Cairns in North Queensland claimed victory in the Junior National Heavy class and this was her first major victory since returning to Go Karting at the beginning of the year after a six month break from competition.

Holman, who drives an Arrow AX9 28-30 #12 Go Kart, was on the pace throughout the 'Young Guns' Title, that is an annual event opened to only Junior competitors, in the Junior National Heavy class and was a thoroughly deserving winner.

Leading up to the 15-lap final, Holman had qualified on pole position, and then finished her two heat races in third and second place respectively. Qualifying as the second highest point scorer going into the Pre Final, Holman started from position two on the grid and with her starting position not being the most ideal for the Lismore Kart Track, she was shuffled back to second spot. With only a handful of laps to go Holman, after staying within touch of the leader from the start, had started to challenge for the lead and on the last corner of the final lap, she raced through to the chequered flag and took out victory in both an impressive and spectacular fashion.

Starting the 'Young Guns' Title final for the Junior National Heavy class from pole position, Holman led the opening laps of the final before dropping back to second and she then had to contend with a short battle over second place before managing to pull away and chase after the leader. Once Holman had caught up to the leader she bided her time and waited for an opportunity to make the race winning pass. Then with only two laps remaining, Holman made the pass with ease and was not challenged to the finish.

It may have been a very hard two days of Go Kart competition, but Holman was very happy to come away from the 'Young Guns' Title with the victory spoils.

"I spent all Friday with my father [Leigh Holman] practicing where we worked very hard on setup and race lines and all the hard work paid off," she expressed. "Winning the Young Guns Title is a great honour and one of my best wins in Go Karting. Heading into the final I was very glad to take the win in the pre final as I knew that starting from the inside front row was going to help my winning chances. The race I had in the final was a great one as I had to be patient and wait for an opportunity to make the winning pass. Luckily for me that came with a couple of laps to go as it allowed me to concentrate on consolidating my lead and take a very satisfying victory."

Aside from running in the Junior National Heavy class at the 'Young Guns' Title, Holman also competed in the Junior National Pro class where she finished in fourth place.

Holman's 'Young Guns' Title victory carries on with the good form she has enjoyed this year that included a seventh place finish in the Junior National Heavy class after she had started from grid position 19 at the Nationals (Townsville, QLD) last month.

There is no rest now for Holman as she will be this weekend (May 8 – 10) head to Hume International Raceway in Puckapunyal for the Victorian Open Championship and then she will contest both the Northern Territory and Queensland Championships in June.

Holman wanted to say a big thanks to her parents, Liz and Leigh, along with major sponsor Trinity Petroleum Services, SVS - Cairns, Brian Flay and family (who helps to transport around the country all of her Go Karts and equipment) and Ashley Sequeira from Tolhurst Sharebrokers for all their wonderful support.
