Family Affair At Australian Speedway Kart Titles

AKA press release

A host of second, third and fourth generation stars were on show as family rivalries were put to the test during the inaugural Australian Speedway Kart Titles at the Nepean Motorsport Complex near Castlereagh, NSW last weekend.

The Hopping name is synonymous with success in Australian Speedway and this trend continued across the weekend with David Hopping claiming the win in the KT Light category.

Hopping took the victory ahead of his sister, Alana Baines, who was the fastest driver on the track during the final as she charged her way from eighth place on the grid. By mid-race distance Baines had powered her way to second place but was unable to bridge the lengthy gap her sibling had opened and was forced to settle for second spot at the chequered flag.

Baines’ Husband, Wayne, ensured that he maintained the bragging rights in the household by taking out the KT Heavy class ahead of Graham Keats and Leon Coleman.

In the Junior Light category Kyle Pollock took advantage of every opportunity in the final to slice his way from sixth position at the start to claim the victory. Early race leader Nikki Briton appeared be on course for victory but a mid-race spin ended her chances. Pollock crossed the line clear of Matthew Pescod and Regan Angel.

Corey Foyle took out the Rookies final ahead of Jake Baines while Matthew Pescod proved too good in the Junior Heavy class.

In the Clubman Light category it was David Boyd who claimed the win while Tim Baker proved too good in the Clubman Heavy class.

In the fastest class of the weekend, Formula 100, Jonathon Bright powered his way to victory over Nathan Bailey and Graham Keats.

President of the host club, the New South Wales Speedway Kart Club, Wayne Baines was delighted with the running of the inaugural Australian Speedway Kart Titles.

“Everyone at the club couldn’t be happier, the racing was fantastic and we had a good crowd each day – it was just great,” said Baines.

“It was very pleasing to see a heap of people from speedway and other motorsport circles come out and check out the action.”

The Central Coast Speedway Kart Club will host the next event on the calendar for speedway karters at the Gosford Kart Speedway, which is part of the Gosford Showground, this weekend.
