Another Take On The AKA Australian Speedway Kart Titles

press release

Last weekend (June 6-7) the speedway karts staged a sensational meeting at the Nepean Motorsports complex when the New South Wales Speedway Kart Club hosted the inaugural AKA Australian Speedway Kart titles.

Nearly 100 of the best speedway karters were present for the title weekend and after two hard fought days of racing new Australian title holders were awarded in all eight divisions.

After almost a week of rain, the hard working crew of the Nepean complex and the NSWSKC the track was ready for competition last Saturday and with two rounds of heat races, the action was “red hot” right from the opening heat.

Saturday saw Corey Foyle demolish the Rookies picking up both heat race wins while in the Junior Lights the wins were shared by Michael Saller and Luke Spinly. Young Ashleigh Briton fresh from a summer racing in the Junior Sedans at the TPCR took out the opening heat in the Junior Heavy division while Matthew Pescod was the other winner.  Joel Goff and David Hopping (now recovered from burns caused by anincident in a  sprintcar at Parramatta) were winners in the KT Open Lights while in the KT Open Heavy, Graham Keats and Cameron Coghlan shared victories on Saturday. The Clubman Lights also produced great action with Jade Pollock and former NSWSKC Champion Michael Jordan picking up the wins with Anthony Selmes and James Camilleri the winners in the Clubman Heavy ranks. The “gun division” Formula 100 the wins were shared by Joel Rhind and Nathan Bailey.

Rain again fell overnight at the Nepean Motorsports complex but everything was still OK for Sunday’s final round of heats and feature races.  After another brilliant round of heats, everything was set for that all important 20 laps (15 for the Rookies) feature races.

With Corey Foyle sharing the front row with Daniel Sayre, Corey continued his sensational form and shot off to unbeatable race lead in the Rookies.  Fourth generation speedway racer Jordyn Brazier was a non starter after having problems on the formation laps and Daniel Sayre after dropping back in the opening laps fought back into third to finish behind winner Corey Foyle and second placed Jake Baines.

Impressive Nikki Briton shot into the lead in the Junior light division and quickly built up a good break over Kyle Pollock. Just before half race distance Nikki spun out in turn 4 and luckily wasn’t hit. That gave the lead to Kyle Pollock with Matthew Pescod forging into second relegating Michael Saller to third. Saller had a fast finishing Regan Angel on his tail with Angel powering by after a restart to pick up third at the checker. Nikki Briton was able to continue and picked up a solid fourth placing. So Kyle Pollock continued to take an unchallenged victory in the Junior Light ranks.

After finishing second in the Junior Light division, Matthew Pescod dominated the 20 lap feature for the Junior Heavy and just powered away from the pack. Finishing behind was Ashleigh Briton with Michael Saller third.

David Boyd was unchallenged in taking out the Clubman Light feature with Greg Coghlan and Nathan Bailey following him home. Early in the race Coghlan had a great battle with Jade Pollock but Pollock’s impressive weekend ended late in the race with problems forcing her to retire. Back in the pack Matthew Tourish and Michael Jordon staged a great fight that lasted for many laps.

Tim Baker was certainly very fast in the Clubman Heavy feature and easily took out the race over Gary Slarke with Daniel Selmes third. The race featured many battles behind the leaders with Steve Hogan, James Camilleri and Les Green all impressively fast.

In the KT Open Light David Hopping shot off to an unbeatable lead with Jason Beattie holding second early in the race. Jason Freer also battled with Hopping early but was a non finisher while Alana Baines after passing James Melling settled into a great second placing with Melling home in third.

It was all Wayne Baines in the KT Open Heavy feature and he was followed home by Graham Keats with Leon Coleman third. Brett Coghlan was holding third until a fast finishing Coleman blasted by late in the race to claim third.

With just three laps to run the Formula 100 feature was stopped with Jonathan Bright declared the winner over Nathan Bailey and Graham Keats. The race was red flagged after an incident involving Rod Bright and Donald Stevens and it was a very lucky Jonathan Bright as his kart had just dropped a chain as the race was stopped. Mid race Jonathan Bright had to withstand intense pressure from Nathan Bailey but looked like he had the lead under his control.
