Chermaz Finishes Top Ten in Euro Superkart Championship

from Mark Jones

Brisbane based Superkart racer Carlo Chermaz and Sydneysider Sam Zavaglia both competed overnight in the final round of the European Superkart Championship held at the legendary Dutch circuit of Assen. A pair of top ten finishes vaulted Chermaz up the pointscore to complete the three round series in ninth position.

After qualifying in sixth position on Saturday, his best qualifying performance for the series, Chermaz driving the factory supported Buildersmile Construction PVP finished the first race in an excellent sixth position, chasing home British ADE-PVP driver Mark Owens, with Carl Hulme (Anderson-FPE) a similar gap behind.

After a fraught qualifying session which saw him start 33rd on the grid Sam Zavaglia raced through the field to finish his Anderson-PVP in 19th position.

The second race saw Chermaz finish in seventh position having spent the closing laps on his own with gaps either side. The 19 points collected from the two races was good for seventh position for the round and vaulted Chermaz from 13th into a final position of ninth in the season rankings.

Zavaglia, the new Australian Champion, was less fortunate in the second race and was classified 39th, in the 55 kart field, two laps down on race winner Damien Payart (PVP-FPE).

While Chermaz European campaign continues with an upcoming race at the giant Belgian circuit of Spa-Francorchamps, Zavaglia heads to his usual end of season American hoping to get that long-awaited win after a succession of seconds. This years United State race is being held at Miller Motorsport Park rather than Laguna Seca.
