Nelson Constant In Supercheap Kart Series Round 4

press release

The Mid City Autos supported Doyle’s Racing Kartsport team was on the Podium again in Round 4 of the Supercheap Auto Kart Series at Rockhampton, with driver Brendan Nelson locking away 2nd in Pro Clubman Light class.

Series Nominations for the Round were solid, with 91 competitors entered across the 7 Series’ classes offered.  The Rockhampton Kart Club members together with the Series Organisers extended a warm welcome by organising a Pre-Race Dinner at the Edge Restaurant, Rockhampton on Friday night.

Due to a clash with the City of Melbourne Titles, DRK driver 11yo Mitchell Gee didn’t join his fellow team mate Brendan Nelson in Rockhampton for the Supercheap Auto round.  Brendan’s results were as follows;

Pro Clubman Light - Brendan Nelson (Kosmic # 70)
With a strong finish in the previous Bundaberg round, Nelson was assured of a front row start alongside Cian Fothergill in the first of the 15 Klm races at Rockhampton under the Supercheap Auto Kart Series format.  From the outset all of the usual suspects except for Ben Stewart (competing in City of Melbourne Titles) were at the front of the pack and jostling for position.  Fothergill, Nelson, Shay Mayes, Justin Garioch, Nathan Garioch, Bevan Garioch and Clinton Marcon delivered some tremendous racing before Justin Garioch pipped Nelson by what seemed less than a nose cone for the Race 1 win, with Mayes, Marcon, Fothergill and Nathan Garioch in hot pursuit respectively.
Race 2 was another fantastic race between this same squadron, however Brock Ten Bensel would drive from Grid 10 to put a cat amongst the Series regulars and steal a solid 2nd place behind Justin Garioch and ahead of Nelson, Mayes, Michael Doherty and Nathan Garioch.  Fothergill was relegated to 8th behind Scott Sorenson and ahead of Marcon.

Starting from Grid 3 in the third and final 18 lap race for the day, Nelson had his work cut out for him in a tussle with an exceptionally competitive Pro Clubman Light field.  Justin Garioch took a 3rd convincing win and clean sweep for the day from pole, whilst Brock Ten Bensel, Fothergill, Nelson, Mayes, Nathan Garioch, Marcon and Sorenson raced hard all of the way to the chequered flag behind him.

Consistently placing in the Top 4 all day ensured sufficient points for Nelson to lock down 2nd outright in the Round behind Justin Garioch and just ahead of Brock Ten Bensel.

Leopard Light – Brendan Nelson (Kosmic # 70)
Nelson knew he’d be challenged by recent CIK Round winner John Grother in the Supercheap Auto Kart Series Leopard Light class.  Starting from 6th Nelson battled throughout Race 1 making it up to 3rd before losing brake confidence late in the race, only to follow Grother, Fothergill, Prajbisz and Mayes home in 5th.

Determined to make good on his Race 1 speed Nelson finished 2nd in Race 2 behind Grother and ahead of Justin Garioch, Mayes, Prajbisz and Nathan Garioch.

Starting from the front row with Grother in Race 3, Nelson was in a strong position to capitalise on what seemed to be a good weekend.  This soon came to an end when something let go on his kart and he dropped back through the field and retired.  With Grother also registering a DNF, this left Justin Garioch to capitalise on his already stellar weekend, taking the win ahead of Fothergill, Mayes and Graham Prajbisz.

Nelson’s points netted him 6th outright for the round behind Justin Garioch, Grother, Mayes, Prajbisz and Fothergill.
The 5th and final Round of the 2009 Supercheap Auto Kart Series on August 29 / 30 is at Warwick.
