Mitch Brien - The King of The Dirt

press release

mitch brienIn only his fourth race meeting as a senior in Speedway Karts, Mitch Brien has broken through for his first major victory by taking out the King of the Dirt event recently at Gosford Speedway on the Central Coast of NSW.

The current Australian Junior Quarter Midget Champion had played second fiddle to Nathan Bailey throughout the qualifying heat races of the King of the Dirt event in the Clubman Light class but won took out the most important race of the whole event...the final!

Brien started the 20 lap final from outside of the front row alongside pole sitter Nathan Bailey, after he had finished second in all four of his heat races and on each occasion it was behind Bailey. From the start Brien gained the lead in the opening turn and from there was never headed despite plenty of pressure from Bailey.

“Winning the King of Dirt is certainly a big thrill and one that I had to work really hard to achieve as Nathan [Bailey] kept me honest from start to finish,” the 16-year-old explained. “In each of my heat races I had finished second to Nathan and when I started alongside him in the final I knew I had to get a jump on him in order to give me the best possible chance to win. Thankfully I was able to achieve that and it was without a doubt one of the keys to my victory.”

Since making his Speedway Kart debut late last year in the Junior Clubman class; Brien has this year stepped up into the Senior Clubman Light class and his victory in the King of the Dirt was only his fourth race meeting. In his other three race meetings, which have all been at Gosford Speedway, this year he has won twice overall and finished fourth in the other.

In regards to his plans for the upcoming 2009/10 season Brien and his family have not yet set any plans in concrete. There are a number of options currently on the table and a decision will be made shortly.

Brien would like to thank his parents Helen and Dave, Pop Terry and Uncle Kevin for all their support along with all his valued sponsors: RaceShirts4u, Dave Brien Race Engines, Central Coast Gearbox and Diff, Coastal Driveline Specialists and Design Effects
