Hutton Counts Down To Macau

press release

2009 New Zealand Formula Junior Kart Champion, 14-year-old King’s College student, Arie Hutton, is in the middle of an intense racing programme in preparation for his second assault on the CIK-FIA Asia Pacific KF3 (Junior) Karting Championship.

The 2009 event is being held in Macau on 9-11 October and this year the Championship is the main support class for the 2009 CIK-FIA World Karting Championship. This is only the second time the World Karting Championship has been contested outside Europe and the event is expected to attract the world’s top kart drivers.

Arie will, in a repeat of last year, race with the Italian Tony Kart Racing Team, home of the current (and three time) World Karting Champion, Marco Ardigo.

Over recent weeks Arie has contested a number of events as part of his build up for Macau.

Arie’s note book:
KartSport New Zealand National Schools Championships, Hawke's Bay
We lent our Kosmic ST30 to King’s College team mate Richard Moore to use in Senior Yamaha and borrowed a Tony Kart Racer ST from Karl Wilson for Junior Yamaha. For Formula Junior we had our usual UTi Tony Kart EVR/TM KF3. Junior Yamaha was a real struggle on the dry race day with the kart not turning in at all well. We later established the new front tyres were a very old batch which when mixed with a fresher batch of rears, created a big imbalance. (Karl has subsequently driven this chassis to a convincing win at the Blossom Festival.). Formula Junior in the wet was also a bit frustrating. I fouled a plug at the start of heat three and then got turned around at the start of heat 5. We were lucky to finish 2nd overall. This is the fourth time I have been second at an NZ Schools event, just can’t seem to nail one. In the Secondary Schools Teams competition Richard, James Wood and I finished second overall. Thank you to Karl for the chassis and Darren Biggs for his help during the weekend.

Top Half Series Round 3, Hamilton
Ayden Biggs offered me a run with his new Vortex KF3 on the UTi EVR for this event. We had not done the previous rounds of Top Half this year but this was a good opportunity to compare the Vortex with our TM plus get some more racing laps in preparation for Macau where we will be using Vortex engines again. The track and engine were both fast and we equalled our 2009 Nationals lap times and managed to win all five heats. Thanks Ayden, the engine is quick!

Formula S Series Round 3, Hamilton
Back to Hamilton again for a two day event with the TM back on the UTi EVR. Bradley Hicks was very quick in his new KF3 and we had no answer for him in the dry after qualifying, despite lap times a tenth quicker than at the Nationals. We were a bit lucky it was wet for the 24 lap final and eventually we finished the weekend strongly. Brad has now caught up a few points in the Series so the last Round at Hawkes Bay will be all on especially as the KF3 field continues to grow.

42nd Blossom Festival, Hawkes Bay
We fitted the Yamaha to the UTi Tony Kart EVR for this event to get some data in preparation for the 2010 Nationals which are being contested at Hawke's Bay next Easter. Friday practice in both wet and dry went ok and we qualified on pole for Saturday’s reverse direction racing and scored a win and two seconds. Sunday qualifying in the normal direction was not as good (6th) and we struggled a bit with a lack of grunt off the slow corners despite the chassis feeling really good right throughout the 25 lap final. We finished 4th after starting on grid 9, but need to find a couple of tenths to be up front. Obviously we have got a bit of work to do before next Easter. Thank you to Stuart Park for his assistance during the weekend.
