Darsey K Aims For A Double

AKA press release

Two thousand and nine has already been a good year on the go-kart track for Hornsby’s Darsey Kondopirakis.

The 16 year-old won the Junior National Heavy Australian Championship in Townsville at Easter time and this weekend he will be aiming to make it a great year by winning the Formula JMA category in the Rotax Nationals at Eastern Creek.

“The win in Townsville was certainly the biggest win of my career that started when I was 11, everything seemed to fall my way – including some luck,” said Kondopirakis.

“This weekend is going to be just as tough, almost all of the top guys from across the country will be here and I haven’t raced the Rotax engine too much but when I have raced it I’ve been very competitive.”

Kondopirakis’ passion for the sport of karting began almost six years ago when his father Andy and a friend were racing karts, after one practice run a young Kondopirakis was instantly hooked.

“It seems so long ago that I first drove a kart but its certainly something that I am grateful that I have been able to do,” said the Year 10 student at Kuringgai Creative Arts High School.

“Karting is a really fun sport and something that I can enjoy with my Dad while also making a heap of friends from all around the place and learning a lot about driving skills along the way.”

Ben Jurczak and Max Johnston are considered two of the favourites for this weekend’s Title along with fellow Sydneysider Pierce Lehane, Gold Coast’s Chris Hays, Albury's Macauley Jones and Canberra's Mathew Hart.

All drivers at this weekend’s Rotax Karting Nationals will be competing aboard 125cc Rotax-powered karts reaching speeds in excess of 100 km/h while racing only centimetres apart on the 1024-metre circuit.

Practice will be held on Friday followed by qualifying on Saturday with the Championship Finals scheduled for Sunday.

The Eastern Creek International Karting Raceway is located on Peter Brock Drive at Eastern Creek.

This weekend’s event kickstarts a double-header of action for karting in the Western Sydney region with Oran Park hosting the New South Wales State Championships the following weekend (October 2-4).
