Pocket Rocket To Blast Off At Kart Nationals

AKA press release

What Castle Hill’s Pierce Lehane lacks in size he certainly makes up for in heart and determination.

Since moving from the motorcross ranks to follow his Dad and Grandfather onto the karting track 18 months ago the diminutive racer has risen to the top and is considered to be one of the contenders for the Rotax Karting Nationals at Eastern Creek this weekend.

Lehane will line up alongside some of the best young karters aged between 13 and 16 years of age in the Formula JMA category as they battle to be crowned the inaugural National Champion of the category.

“Some people say that I’ve got an aerodynamic advantage being so small,” joked Lehane, who is a year eight student at Northholm Grammar.

“I started racing motorcross when I was about five years old and after too many broken bones Mum thought it would be a better idea if I followed Dad and Pop and went kart racing instead.

“Since then I have really enjoyed the racing and it has been really good this year to be able to battle with some of the best drivers of my age group on the country.

“I’m very confident going into this weekend’s event, I’ve got a new CRG kart which should go well and help me be very competitive across the weekend.”

Lehane rates his recent drive from tenth to third behind Ben Jurczak and Max Johnston in the Rotax Pro Tour in Melbourne as the best of his flourishing career.

Both Jurczak and Johnston are considered two of the favourites for this weekend’s Title along with fellow Sydneysider Darsey Kondopirakis, Gold Coast’s Chris Hays, Albury's Macauley Jones and Canberra's Mathew Hart.

All drivers at this weekend’s Rotax Karting Nationals will be competing aboard 125cc Rotax-powered karts reaching speeds in excess of 100 km/h while racing only centimetres apart on the 1024-metre circuit.

Practice will be held on Friday followed by qualifying on Saturday with the Championship Finals scheduled for Sunday.

The Eastern Creek International Karting Raceway is located on Peter Brock Drive at Eastern Creek.

This weekend’s event kickstarts a double-header of action for karting in the Western Sydney region with Oran Park hosting the New South Wales State Championships the following weekend (October 2-4).
