Corey Lean Aiming For Title Number Eight

AKA press release

Colyton kart racer Corey Lean has got his sights set on his eighth State Championship when he takes to the circuit for the New South Wales State Karting Championship at Oran Park this weekend.

Lean, 21, gained a passion for the sport of motor racing 11 years ago while watching his Uncle from the sidelines and since then has been hooked on the adrenaline rushing sport.

“Once I got in a kart I was instantly hooked, the adrenaline rush when you get out on the circuit is simply amazing,” said Lean, who is the owner-operator of Podium Signs.

“During my teenage years the sport of karting really taught me a lot in the way of car control and how to react in different situations. Many of these lessons have been extremely valuable while driving on the road once I was old enough to obtain my licence.”

Since making his racing debut in May 1998 Lean has developed into one of the top drivers in Australia in the 100cc National classes having secured an impressive seven State Championships throughout his career.

Last weekend he competed in the Rotax Karting Nationals at Eastern Creek, where in only his third ever start aboard a 125cc powered machine he mixed it with the nations best.

“Last weekend was a new challenge for me, to step up against Australia’s best 125cc drivers was a big learning experience and while I didn’t finish with a top result I still learnt a lot across the weekend,” said Lean.

“My focus now can purely be on this weekend’s event at Oran Park where I feel right at home.”

Over the past 40 years the Oran Park Raceway in Narellan has been the venue for some of the most memorable races in Australian karting history with a number of the world’s top drivers taking to the circuit behind the wheel of a kart.

The Oran Park venue played host to the Oceania Championships on a number of occasions with the likes of world-class drivers such as Jarno Trulli, Alessandro Manetti, Anthony Davidson and Jan Magnussen all competing alongside Australia’s best.

Some of the drivers who have ‘cut their teeth’ on the Oran Park circuit include IndyCar Championship contender Ryan Briscoe, dual World Karting Champion James Courtney and last year’s V8 Supercar Championship Runner-Up Mark Winterbottom.

With a new housing estate taking over the Oran Park region in the near future, this weekend’s event will be the final Championships to be held at the venue.

Almost 400 entries have been received for the Championships making it one of the largest events on the Australian Karting Calendar this year.

There will be 14 categories being contested over the weekend catering for a number of ages, weights and engine capacities. Qualifying begins on Friday with heat races being contested throughout the afternoon and into Saturday followed by the Championship Finals on Sunday.

The Oran Park Raceway is located on the Great Northern Road, Narellan.
