Hryniuk Wins Oran Park Finale

AKA press release

Sydney kart racer Jason Hryniuk has secured victory in the final karting Championship to be decided at the Oran Park Raceway in Narellan, west of Sydney, this afternoon.

Hryniuk, who finished third behind V8 Supercar driver Mark Winterbottom the last time the Championships were held at the venue in 1998, led home a high quality field in the Clubman Heavy category to claim the victory.

Finishing second behind Hryniuk was former national champion Shayne Piper and Jason Varley.

The final ever Championship race to be decided at the famous Oran Park Raceway it was fitting that two of the country’s best drivers, who have grown up racing around the venue, would line up on the front row of the Clubman Heavy final.

Sydney drivers Varley and Hryniuk lined up alongside each other to lead the field at the start of the race. Unfortunately for third placed starter, Jason Pringle, his race was over before it had even began with a mechanical failure putting him out of the running.

Varley and Hryniuk were joined in a battle for the lead by 2008 National Champion Piper as the trio swapped the front running on a number of occasions.

With the honour of being the final winner of a kart championship at Oran Park all three of them weren’t about to hand the coveted blue plate over easily and battled wheel to wheel throughout the 16-lap encounter.

Hryniuk made his move with a handful of laps remaining to relegate Varley back into second spot, a position that Piper also relieved him of shortly after before setting his sights on the rear bumper of Hryniuk’s CRG kart.

A slight error exiting the final turn by Piper in his Australian-made Monaco kart allowed Hryniuk a slender buffer which he held over the final circulation to claim an emotional victory.

“Oran Park is a very special place for me and a lot of people in karting across the country, so it means a lot to me to have won the final ever championship to be held here,” said Hryniuk, who claimed the 21st State Championship of his career today.

“Over the years I have seen some of the best drivers from not only Australia but also the world compete here at Oran Park. This is where guys like Mark Winterbottom, Ryan Briscoe and James Courtney all started their careers.

“Today was another great battle, I knew going into this race that it wasn’t going to be easy with such a quality field. I was lucky enough to have pace when it mattered most and came through for the win.”

In the junior ranks it was Canberra’s Mathew Hart who proved dominant in the final of Junior Clubman. The teenager got the early jump and by the end of lap two had opened up a buffer of over 15 kart-lengths over Ben Jurczak.

As the race wore on it was Hart who proved superior to claim the win. Jurczak drove a lonely race for second, as did Chris Farkas in third.

Rick Pringle made the pass on Jason for the lead on lap six an immediately opened a five kart-length gap. Corey Lean was looking good on a drying track to charge his way to fourth spot by mid race distance. Craig Thornton was recovering from a DNF in the pre-final and was the big mover from the back of the pack to be in fourth spot with a handful of laps remaining. However, the leading trio were unstoppable and very evenly spread with Phillips taking a convincing win over Blake Scibberas and Ryan Reynolds. Craig Thornton crossed the line fourth but was relegated to 14th following a post race stewards hearing.

Mawson, who was undefeated throughout the lead up races, led the way but was closely followed by the CRG kart of Jake Coleman. The battle for third was intense between Joshua Seiffert and Camillo before the pair were joined by Jordan Nicolaou. 3. #69 Blake Sciberras
4. #98 Scott Mclaughlin
5. #64 Adam Hughes

Race Notes:
During the early running it appeared as though David Sera would dominate the proceedings of the final in Clubman Light, however, it wasn’t to be. The Victorian was reeled in by David Whitmore and Blake Sciberras over the closing stages to make it a three way battle for the lead. When Whitmore and Sera came together at top of the circuit on the final lap the latter ran off the circuit before coming to a halt after spinning on the wet grass.
