There were celebrations all round in the Greenbury family last night after brothers, Tyler and Matt took out Rotax Light and Heavy respectively at the final event of the 2009 Rotax Pro Tour, the Masters 100 in Queensland.

The first part of the event was conducted at Ipswich Kartway on Saturday, however the racing surface was deemed unsuitable for racing midway through the day. In an unprecedented move, the entire event was moved to Toowoomba’s Greer Park Raceway for conclusion on Sunday in very hot conditions. Some competitors reported the mercury hit 38 degrees on their weather stations.

Tony Kart’s Tyler Greenbury was by far the standout competitor in Rotax Light, taking victory in the final by over nine seconds. Having recently stepped up from Juniors, Greenbury was the class of the field at both circuits.

Second in the Rotax Light final in his debut as a Senior driver was Monster Energy Drinks Tony Kart driver, Max Johnston. Having only taken delivery of the engine earlier in the week, Johnston oozed class as he kept his cool during a frantic first lap to secure the second placing.

Recovering for third was Kart One Racing pilot, David Whitmore. After starting on the front row, Whitmore was shuffled back in the pack in the opening circulation, but fought back well. Rounding out the top five were Andrew Gatland and Damian Ward.

Formula JMA once again fell the way of OTK Redspeed driver, Ben Jurczak, however the National Champion had to work hard for the win – evidenced by his exhaustion at the end of the race. Gold Coaster, Jack Howard put in arguably the performance of his career to lead for a majority of the final and stick with Jurczak – a recent change in chassis to Intrepid for the Crimsafe sponsored second generation racer seems to be paying dividends.

Rockstar Energy Drinks CRG pilot, Pierce Lehane came home in third spot. He was sitting down in the field for much of the race, however executed a late race pass on the impressive James Macken to once again stand on a Pro Tour podium. Macken would bring his Tony Kart to fourth in an impressive display, with the other Intrepid mounted Howard brother, Sam, in fifth.

Matt Greenbury upheld the family honour in Rotax Heavy, taking victory in his Tony Kart by 1.6 seconds. The class was a tussle right throughout the weekend between Greenbury and Gerry Brookes (Kaos Karting Intrepid) – who won the Over-35s class at the Raleigh Rotax Pro Tour event.

Brookes came home in second placing, with Jonathan Dwyer taking a hard fought third placing in his Minarelli Smash Repairs machine.

A change in circuit didn’t hinder Rotax Over-35s winner, Nicholas Crawshay. If anything, it worked in his favour as he stormed to a dominant win, taking victory by over 12 seconds from Stable Karting Tony Kart driver, Bruce Otter.

Crawshay established his lead early and just kept pulling away. Otter had difficulty getting a handle on proceedings at Ipswich, but the Canberra based driver came into his own at Toowoomba, fighting through to take another podium finish.

Finishing third was Victorian, Paul Mapperson. He had to work hard for the podium placing, though and proved to have a better setup for the final part of the long 24 lap final. Nigel Ward and an unlucky Luke Wall rounded out the top five, Wall looking good for a podium finish until a late race coming together.

The Rotax DD2 final was a Queensland benefit, with Kyle Ensbey showing local knowledge to take the victory in his Kaos Karting Arrow over National Champion, Brinley Gread. Ensbey put in a strong effort to come away with the victory.

Gread was battling a front brake issue for the entire distance, some frantic work on the grid before the race wasn’t able to fix the problem – temperatures in the mid-30’s aside, he was changing gears, negotiating the racetrack and operating the brake cable by hand…and still finished second!

In third was the greatly improved Stable Karting Tony Kart driver, Paul Hamilton – his improvement one of the real highlights of the Pro Tour. Rounding out the top five were Gordon Wells –  who had a fairly lonely drive – and Steve Martin – who was once again embroiled in a weekend long fight with his ‘Stable (Karting) mates’ David Hitchcock and Robert Harnas.

Rotax Importer, Ian Black thanked all competitors and officials for their efforts in supporting the inaugural Rotax Pro Tour throughout 2009:

“The Rotax Pro Tour has really energised the karting community and we’ve been so pleased to see competitors from all over Australia supporting our events throughout the year,” he said.

"We’ve had some wonderful feedback from everyone that has been involved in the Pro Tour this year and I really have to thank the volunteer officials at each of the four circuits we visited, they do a great job for the sport and have really helped us put these events on throughout the year.

“We now only have the Rotax Max Grand Finals to go in Egypt this year and I wish the Australian competitors the very best of luck in their quest to become Rotax World Champions.”

In the Australian CIK Championship, Hayden McBride took out his first CIK National Championship despite some technical issues during heat racing. Tyson Pearce – despite coming into the event just a few points off the Championship lead – was hindered by a blown engine aboard his Omega Kart.

McBride’s Gillard team-mate, John Grother made it four finals on the trot, taking out both events and a huge swag of cash and prizes thanks to Defence Industries and St George Kart Centre.
Rounding out the podium in final one were McBride and CRG’s Ryan Gallagher – who earlier took out two heat race wins, despite suffering from a cracked rib, sustained during qualifying at Ipswich.

The second final podium saw McBride once again complete the Gillard quinella, with Matthew Waters in his first ever CIK event taking a torrid third placing aboard his Arrow machine.
