Tassie Titles Underway At Smithton

AKA press release

The small band of members from the Circular Head Kart Club are certainly putting on a great show for competitors at the 2009 Tall Timbers Hotel/Motel Tasmanian State Karting Championships in Smithton this weekend.

While they may only have a handful of licenced members, they have worked tirelessly over the past few months to ensure this weekend’s event is a success – and their hard work is certainly paying off.

Qualifying and the opening round of heats were completed on the Smithton circuit today with a mix of local and mainland drivers sharing the honours.

The opening heat of the Midgets category was certainly the race of the day with the lead changing on no less than four occasions during the final lap. In the end it was Alex Peroni who crossed the line first.

Launceston driver Zane Wyatt appears to have the edge over his opposition in the Leopard Light field and is also among the front runners in the Clubman Heavy category which boasts the largest grid of the championships.

Ex-pat Tasmanian Jarred Bishop, who now resides in Western Australia, claimed the opening heat honours in Clubman Heavy. He was followed across the line by Sam Harrington and Aaron Johnstone, who is a recent graduate to the senior ranks.

In Junior Clubman it was Jarrod Egan who took the win but the current Australian Champion Chris Hays made the Bendigo driver work hard. Hays shadowed Egan for the duration of the event before taking over the front running on the final lap, only to have Egan retake the lead with a few corners remaining.

The usual suspects are at the front of the pack in the Junior National Light with Brad Jenner, Liam Morey and Liam Sager battling for the win while Ashley Quiddington and Callum Zizek are setting the pace in Junior National Heavy.
