Cobb's 2nd King of Nationals Crown

press release

The Harrington Doyle Corporate Resources supported team driver, Terry Cobb took a decisive point’s win over Alexandra Whitley and Richard Dimmock in the Ipswich Kart Club’s King of Nationals at Toowoomba on the second Sunday of November, after having finished in the Top 3 all day, throughout the Heats, Pre-Final and Final.

The King and Queen of Nationals was the featured class of the event, attracting some of the best local Senior National Pro (@145kg) class drivers to compete for the perpetual trophy and some tremendous prizes.

Keen to see a competitive full field, DRK’s Clubman / Leopard team driver Brendan Nelson used fellow Junior Team mate Mitchell Gee’s Arrow XE 28 National heavy kart and gridded up alongside Cobb in a blue / green Team assault on the Senior Nationals.

Having won the King of Nationals Title in 2005 and being some months since his last National class races and double podiums at the 2009 Queensland State Open Titles, Cobb (pic, right) quickly dialled himself back into his kart and the Greer Park Raceway during Saturday’s practice.  Piecing together his entry from his National light and heavy Arrow karts, he was soon on the pace and banking some very credible lap times.

Come Sunday’s race day, Cobb was joined by his father Phil as Crew Chief.  The pair immediately showed that Terry was going to be quick out of the gate and had the finesse to make it through the field on each occasion into a Top 3 finish.  Although Dimmock made the early break, a DNF in Heat 2 stripped him of the vital points that he would need to take the crown at the end of the day.

Cobb’s Heat 2 win and further consistency of Top 3 placings all day kept him in the points hunt, but he was regularly being challenged by a competitive field, which included Scott Sorensen, sisters Alexandra and Victoria Whitley and Team mate Brendan Nelson.  These 6 leading karts weren’t always having it all their own way either, with Allan Mayes and Michael Henderson making up the pack and biting at their heels.  Sadly, Paul Brackam had a couple unfortunate DNS results, which pushed him down the points table.

“I just want to say, Thank-you to Harrington Doyle for getting me on track once again.  I really appreciate it.  I am glad to have given those guys the best result on the day. It’s simply Orr’some!” said winner, Terry Cobb.

“When Brendan told us that he wanted to run the King of Nationals event and support local “J” racing, it just didn’t seem right that our Senior National Team driver, Terry Cobb couldn’t be part of it as well.  With a bit of organising, we’re glad to have been able to get both of our boys on the grid and give ourselves a double shot chance at a win or maybe a 1, 2 result.  Terry and Brendan always present very professionally and are very dedicated to their sport.  This reflects well on Harrington Doyle and also our Team.  I’m as equally pleased to be involved in what I consider to be the lifeblood of our sport, National class racing.  It’s all well and good to move on to greater things, but this is where most of us started and it’s great to have the opportunity to support and showcase this class when we can.  Today’s wheel to wheel racing is absolutely evident of how great and precise “J” racing can be,” said Team Manager, Craig Doyle.

Backing up Terry Cobb’s win for the Team, Brendan Nelson took a 6th outright in the King of Nationals and a 2nd place podium in the supporting Clubman Heavy class.  DRK’s Mitchell Gee also collected a 5th place podium and $50 Kaos Karting voucher in the Junior National Pro (@130kg) class on the day.

“All around the boys did very well.  We’re pleased that Terry retains his crown within our Team as the lead Senior National driver, and that they’re all having so much fun in doing what they’re all so passionate about.  Each member of our Team has their own niche and it’s a terrific bonus to see them working together and with us old blokes in the Team to help each other and present the best that they can.  We couldn’t ever ask for anything more than that,” said Doyle.
