Sera Sets The Pace On Pre-Finals Day

AKA press release

Victorian David Sera will start on pole position in the championship finals for both the Leopard Light and Clubman Light categories at the National Sprint Kart Championships in Puckapunyal, Victoria tomorrow.

Sera steered his Arrow kart to victory in the pre-final of Leopard Light over fellow Melbournite Dean Foster. His run in the Clubman Light was nearly as impressive taking out two of his three heat races and finishing second in the other.

While he may be starting from P1 in the final of both classes, the 10-time Australian champ is not expecting an easy day on Sunday.

“In both classes it’s really close so we are still working pretty hard to ensure we’ve got the karts right for the finals,” said Sera.

“It’s been a big week of work preparing for this event and we’ve got both Arrow chassis running very well. But Sunday is where it counts.

“In both Leopard and Clubman it’s very close and there are a handful of guys in each class that have been at the front all weekend, so I’ll definitely have to work hard for it tomorrow.”

The battle for the Clubman Heavy crown will be intense during tomorrow’s final with the likes of fastest qualifier Zeke Edwards, 2008 champion Shayne Piper, Doyles Racing’s Brendan Nelson and Kayne Hughes among the front runners. Also looking menacing is Justin Garioch, Jason Pringle, Jace Lindstrom and Jason Varley.

CRG driver Jason Hryniuk was looking good for a starting spot near the front of the final but a coming together with Michael Griffiths in heat three has forced him down the starting grid. After qualifying 20th, Troy Hunt was another to be making in roads towards the front of the field before crashing out on lap one of the third heat.

New South Wales driver Joseph Mawson is on track to record his maiden national title by locking down pole position in the Junior Clubman category by victory in the pre-final over Anton De Pasquale.

Mawson should also figure prominently in the Junior National Light championship final tomorrow where he will start alongside Liam Morey on the front row.

“This is my second nationals and after just missing the podium last year, I want to be on it tomorrow,” said Mawson.

“We’ve been working on the kart over the weekend and it’s been getting better every race, right now everything is looking good.

“There are a lot of young guys who have just come up from the Rookies and their bloody quick. I’m glad that I am one of the older ones in the field and have got a lot of experience as I think it will come in to play tomorrow.”
