Superkarts: Thanks From the Chairman

press release / Carlo Chermaz

Dear members,

The first round of  the SKA Shannons Nationals, sponsored by Dunlop, has been completed. Congratulations to everyone who made this event possible, from the drivers to the organisers.

When SKA was approached by CAMS to be the Category Administrator for Superkarting, there were ranging opinions as to the ability of SKA to be successful.  The first round of the 2010 Shannons Nationals at PI for many, would be the litmus test as to the ability for SKA in its new role.  The response to this championship round has been unprecedented.  The pre-registration response has never been so strong with 40 plus entrants pledging their support to not only the race at PI but membership to SKA before official entries had even opened.  SKA membership has gained not only driver entrants, but many ordinary memberships from state club members not competing in this year's championships.   This strong support gave SKA confidence to press and make the 2010 Shannons Nationals the largest National event seen in years.

Phillip Island became the place to be for Superkarts on May 1st.  With 47 on the grid, it was a spectacle I had not seen in a long time.  The strong field approached the start line, the F3 and Commodore divisions came out from their pits to watch the start of every race.  All three categories were contested.  Two international drivers and multiple Australian Champion entrants made the huge field difficult to select an outright winner in any heat.  It was clear that  the Australian Superkart Championship was the flagship of the PI meeting for Shannons, with the most entrants of any category filling the vantage points with the most people from the heavily populated circuit, affixed for every start.   The four heats produced different winners, some wet weather created some safety car moments and at the end of the day there was only a guess who the overall winners could be.  Moving through the garages is was commented to me on how good the event felt to everyone which gave me a great satisfaction. Everyone felt welcomed by PI officials, SKA, track assistants. Thank you to all the people that made this weekend a pleasure to attend.

Congratulations to Gary Pegararo, Darren Hossack and International driver Trevor Roberts filling the 250 Inter places.  Martin Latta, Luke May and David Yuill for the placings in the 250 Nat. class.  Darren Dunn, Steve Tomasi and Jeff Reed for their placing in the 125 Gearbox class.

As we make our way to Morgan Park, it is clear from the quality field in all classes that there is no obvious team that will win the 2010 SKA Shannons National Superkart Championship.  With the QLD leg still to be held, some excellent drivers from the north are to join the field to add to the already impressive depth this grid has produced.  Morgan Park I believe, shows the ingredients needed to give all of us the climax we look for in any championship with excellent drivers, crews, families and friends.  This, coupled with the dedication of officials and assistants, state clubs and members, will be brought together on the Saturday night for an ASC dinner hosted by the QLD Superkart club. This promises to be an entertaining night  for everyone.  Invitations will be posted as the event draws closer.

SKA has fielded many suggestions by members as to how to make our Championships better in many aspects such as, paperwork, logistics and payment processing.  SKA is reviewing many current areas and will streamline the way in which entries for example are organised.  Our goal is less paperwork for the entrant and faster turnaround in communication, eliminating various tiers of current organised structures.  Hopefully we can produce in time, a user friendly way of entering without compromising the detail that is needed to run a national event.

The entrants, organisers, officials and assistants have shown we have the greatest show on earth.  Please join me at Morgan Park in August  to see how the Championship winds up and to celebrate our collective success in 2010.
