The Mackay Kart Club was the host for round 2 of the Supercheap Kart Series over the 15th, 16th May weekend.  117 karters travelled from all over Queensland to the City of Mackay, and some excellent racing in all classes prevailed over the course of the weekend. 

For many, this was the first time to race on the new Mackay layout, and a perfect opportunity to do some serious testing for the upcoming State Titles at the end of June.  The club has done a massive job to create a great complex, and the visiting karters gave the track the big "thumbs up." 

The Supercheap format saw three heats of 20 laps each during the day on the Sunday, and being such a busy track, there were some weary bodies by the end.

Midgets
As always, the mighty Midgets put on great racing and with a field of 16 competitors,  we weren't to be disappointed at this event.  Declan Bloye, who qualified 1st, and Harrison Oddie - qualified 2nd- went at it in every race, with Declan having a 1 -2-1 finish, and harrison a 2-1-2.  Overall Declan took the event win with Harrison 2nd.  The battle behind the leader was intense in all three heats.  Joseph Black had a tough start with a DNF in heat 1, but battled on to finish overall 7th for the day after qualifying 4th.  Declan Fraser, Brock Owen, Reily Bloye and Mitchell Bennett raced wheel to wheel, swapping positions all day for the minor placings.  Great to see a couple of local newcomers to the sport - Rheanna Lansdowne and Thomas Brazil having a go in a big field, which will be great experience for them.

Pro Junior National.
This class was a street fight from start to finish in all three races. The lead group of Jordan Page, Scott Hynes, and Josh Smith, were climbing all over each other on every single lap. Unfortunately heat 2 saw a coming together when Scott Hynes put a move on the leader Josh Smith, ending heat 2 for the two of them, and having to start at the rear for heat 3, and giving Jordan Page a comfortable race win, and overall win for the day. Not far behind, another battle between locals  Alistair Ingram, Hayden Schneider, and Levi Cameron and Brady McHugh from Cooloola were all doing the same.  Local racer Josh Morton was showing pace, but a DNF in heat 2 led to a tough day in the office - having to then start from last in heat 3..  He ended up 9th overall after qualifying 4th.

Leopard Heavy   
Rockhampton Driver Matt "DISCO" Dicinoski was over the moon to out qualify Brendan Nelson and pick up pole position after qualifying.  Unfortunately, the celebrations would not continue on the Sunday.  Brendan Nelson came out firing and showed a clean pair of heals for three out of three races.  DISCO Matt had three lonely races running around in 2nd for three out of three.  Gavin Whitmore, Scott Dagan, Denis Butler, and Roy Johnson, however, had intense battles racing wheel to wheel where you could throw a blanket over all of them, for the minor positions.

Junior Clubman
The smallest field of the event, but some intense racing all the same.  Heat one saw Jarred Land drop a chain after qualifying position 2.  The race turned into a two way battle between Sam Lumsden and Sam Taylor for the lead, with Stephen Appleton, Michael Von Rappard and Ben Harms battling for the third spot.  Unfortunately Ben Harm pulled out of the class later in the day after being hurt in the National race.  Heat 2  saw Jarred Lane start from last and work his way to the lead.  In the last two laps he got smothered by Sam Taylor who took the race win, and Sam Lumsden got under Jarred on the final lap to take 2nd.  Race 3 saw Sam Lumsden take the race win for an overall win for the day, with Sam Taylor 2nd, and 2nd for the day, and Jarred Lane 3rd, for overall 3rd for the day.

Pro Clubman
The largest filed of the day with 33 karts led to the repercharge format being used for the first time in the Supercheap series.  With everyone outside the top 22 having to race to get into the main gaime, qualifying was crucial.  After the first repercharge, local driver Jamie Penning and Toowoomba driver Luke Harrison raced well enough to stay out of the next two repercharge races. Qualifying saw Cian Fothergill on Pole, followed by local driver Justin Garioch, Brendan Nelson on 3, Nathan Garioch on 4, and Chris Hays on 5.  The list goes on, but the makings of some great racing was evident.  Race one saw Chris Hays came from 5th to pressure Brendan Nelson all the way, with Justin Garioch and Cian Fothergill in the mix as well.  A DNF in race two for young Chris Hays put an end to his challenge for the weekend, having to go into the repercharge, and then rear of grid for the final.  Local driver Brooke Leech struggled in qualifying to sit position 15.  Her race pace improved to see her finish overall in 6th position.  The end of race two saw the track covered in yellow vests after 10 DNF's were collected from the middle of the track. 

Rookies.   
Rookies were dominated by the local drivers - Jordan McGregor - Pole Sitter and overall round winner, and Jake Downs - Qualified 2 and overall finished 2nd.  Jordan had Jakes measure up until the final heat, and although not for the round win, Jake had the final say with a win in the final.  Jamie Grohman led the battle between Russell Whitaker, Cody Cidoni Josh rodgers and Thomas Ewart for 3rd position, while Russell Whittaker battled after a DNF in heat 1 to work his way back to 4th overall for the day.  A little further back Brendan Granata, Nicholas Butler and Jade Ewart were also engrossed in their own battle.  This is one class where the locals have laid down the gauntlet for the upcoming state titles.

Leopard Light.
Qualifying saw local driver Brooke Leech outshine the field and take the number 1 postion.  Race 1 saw Brooke go the lead with Luke Lane sneaking under Shay Mayes to go to 2nd.  Unfortunately Shay and Cian Fothergill had a coming together during the first lap tussle which saw them spectating the rest of heat 1.  The rest of the race saw the lead duo of Brooke Leech and Luke Lane never separated by more than 1/2 a kart length.  Lane took the lead on lap 4, Leech took it back on lap 11.  Lane regained the lead on lap 14 and went on to win race 1 with Leech 2nd.  Further back, the battle for 3rd ensued between Graham Prajbisz, Brendan Beaumont, Norton Rogers and Ryan Beaumont, with Graham Prajbisz taking the third position.  Heat 2 saw Luke Lane go to the lead, but Brooke leech got pushed wide at turn 2 dropping her back to the rear of the field, and only able to recover to 6th position.  Shay Mayes and Cian "Fotherzz"  Fothergill took on the chase for Luke Lane, but Lane drove away for a comfortable win, with "Fotherzz" 2nd and Shay Mayes in 3rd.  Race 3 saw the same with Luke Lane taking the win, this time pushed by Shay Mayes - with almost identical lap times lap after lap - and Fotherzz in 3rd.

Senior Pro National.   
This was the support class offered by the club which saw 13 competitors having a go - 11 from Mackay, so needless to say the Mackay members dominated.  The racing was intense in all three races with any one of the first five drivers able to win the day leading into the final.  The show of the day was Shannon Price, however, who went on to take overall 1st.  He was pushed all day by Luke Caputo, Morgan Haber, Todd Stevens, Matt Coulson and Jarryd Ebzery, who started heat 3 on equal points, but had a DNF in the final.
