The reinvigorated 5 Track Series, which showcases Rotax and Yamaha Clubman racing in South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales, made its 2010 debut at the Gympie Gold Raceway this weekend, overcoming a wet start on Saturday to produce some tremendous racing in fine conditions today.

The Yatala Team drivers from Doyle’s Racing Kartsport were in fine form at the opening round, qualifying 3rd (James) and 4th (Brendan) in the Clubman Heavy class.  They leveraged their blue/green second row Start in Heat Racing with Brendan taking a first heat win over Sunshine Coast local Shay Mayes, with his Harrington Doyle Team mate James finishing 4th.

In Heat 2 Shay Mayes showed his local knowledge of the venue making the jump on the 18yo Griffith University Student, Nelson to beat him to the chequered flag whilst Greenwood again took another solid 4th place.

Just prior to the PreFinal, the Greenwood Crew found the source of what had been a nagging problem on their DRK Team Beetham CRG Black Diamond chassis.  This was timely for James as it helped tremendously with his set-up and allowed him to trouble Nelson and Mayes at the front of the PreFinal pack.  Nelson ultimately won the PreFinal with Shay Mayes and Greenwood in hot pursuit to the line.

With the 3 quickest Karts and drivers at the front of the grid and a “Final only” counts format for Round honours, it was clear that the race for the front was going to be on early in the Final.  Nelson knew he had to make the break and proved too strong by jumping out to a 10 Kart length lead early as the others battled it out behind him.  Determined not to let him have it all his own way, Mayes banked a number of quick laps to reel Nelson in toward the end of the race.  When he finally caught on to the back of Nelson, they touched in the closing stages of a thrilling final.  Mayes came off worst from the racing incident and Nelson powered to the finish line to take a fantastic win, with Mayes regathering to cross the line in 2nd with Greenwood taking 3rd.

Climbing up on the podium together with his Team mate, Nelson said, “It’s really great to win, but I know that the boys at Harrington Doyle who couldn’t be here today to watch the racing will be really pleased tonight to hear of my win and that James and I are both on the podium together.  I also want to thank my parents Larry and Jenny for their continued support and devotion to my racing.”

Brendan and James now take a rest this coming weekend, before joining up together as part of the 6 driver Climatrol Enduro Racing Team in the ProKart 24 hour Karting Enduro at Ipswich Kart Club’s Willowbank Raceway, on Sunday 13th to Monday 14thth June, 2010.
