Seven First-Time Champions Crowned

press release

After 2 weeks of constant rain leading into the June long weekend, the weather finally cleared and produced a spectacular weekend which allowed the 18th Annual  NSW Speedway Kart Titles to be run under clear sunny skies and as a result, some of the finest  speedway karting was witnessed on the best track of the season .

The racing produced by all 90 drivers in attendance over the 2 day event was first class. Drivers were able to run wheel to wheel, often 2 and 3 wide, on a track that held its consistency for the 42 scheduled events.

When the final chequered flag dropped on the meeting, 7 first-time class champions were crowned at the well attended  presentation ceremony. The happy, friendly atmosphere from the teams and families that enjoyed the afternoon capped off what was nothing short of another great event for the host club, New South Wales Speedway Kart Club.

The Clubman Light class was first on track and after dominating the big field all weekend it was 2nd year driver Jason Woodward who became the 2010 NSW State Champion.  Following him home in 2nd place was wingless sprintcar driver Nathan Bailey and Michael Jordan in the Wescranes #23 would fill the 3rd place position.

Clubman Heavy was next up and it was the experience of Les Green that would come out on top for 2010. Current Australian Champion Tim Baker was runner up while James Camilleri would receive his first major placing in speedway Karting coming home in 3rd place.

The Rookie class, whilst slightly smaller than expected numbers, certainly didn’t disappoint the crowd and displayed some close racing across the two days. Young tar racer James Abela, who came to give speedway racing a go, came home in first place and is now a speedway state Champion. Central Coast based racer Kyle Angel was able to hang on to 2nd place after a tense race over the last 8 laps with another tar racer, James Duckworth. Duckworth just couldn’t quite get the pass done on Kyle and had to settle for 3rd .

Formula 100, the premier speedway kart class, showed on a fast wide track just what these machines are capable of with some very fast wheel to wheel racing. The focus in the class was the continuation of a race from  the 2009 long weekend between Jonathon Bright and Nathan Bailey, where Jonathon was declared the winner. This year the race would go flag to flag and Nathan would make a pass on early race leader Jonathon on lap 7 and would go on to win the event. Following Bailey and Bright was Graham Keats for 3rd filling the bottom step on the podium.

The Junior class  had the biggest field of the weekend. All drivers in the class showed some of the senior drivers how to race hard and fair and they produced some of the finest racing of the meeting. After an early heat DNF Nathan Camilleri was in a class of his own winning the remaining heats and the final to become a very popular champion. The other half of the Angels racing team, Reagan Angel, held on for 2nd place and he was chased by a fast finishing Daniel Sayre .

KT Modified Light was a class that had some non-regular drivers in the field and one of these was Michael Jordan who, after the 20 lap final had been run and won, came out the victor and is now the NSW Champion for the class. Another driver doing double duties for the weekend, Les Green, was 2nd and the 3rd place went to defending Champion Tim Beattie .

KT Heavy was the class everyone was watching given that this class has had some of the closest and toughest racing this season. Again on the weekend the boys cut loose and drove as hard as they could. In most of the races the field was 2 and 3 wide for the entire race. However it was Cameron Coghlan who would come out in front and take the 1st place in a kart designed and built by himself. The minor placing were filled by Graham Keats in 2nd and Rod Sievwright in 3rd.
