Prizes For New Superkart Lap Records

press release

The addition of a new circuit to the annals of the Rockpress Australian Superkart Championship will see new lap records established. Thanks to Zahl 1 Karting, in conjunction with International Karting Distributors and Sparco Australia, the fastest driver in each of the three classes will receive recognition of the achievement.

Zahl 1 Karting, International Karting Distributors and Sparco Australia have contributed three Sparco Lico Drive gear bags for the drivers who achieved the fastest racing laps in each of the three classes, 250 International, 250 National and 125 Gearbox, over the course of the August 14/15 weekend.

The new 2.97 kilometre version of Morgan Park Raceway will be christened at the championship finale of the gearbox Superkart season as part of Round 7 of the Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships.

Morgan Park's previous 2.1 kilometre circuit was the only circuit in the country where a Superkart held the outright lap record. Seven-time Australian champion Warren McIlveen is the holder of that lap record, a 58.4035 second lap recorded back in 2007 when McIlveen took the lap record away from Formula Holden racer Derek Pingel. Since then open sports cars and Formula 3 racing cars of varying specification have gotten very close but fallen short.

The longer racetrack is expected to favour the longer open wheel categories and with Superkarts sharing the Shannons National program with the Formula 3 Australian Drivers Championship, the challenge for the fastest lap of the weekend, the new outright lap record, will be open to both categories to race for.

Of the existing lap record holders on the 2.1 kilometre, only Warren McIlveen will be able to transfer his record on the new the circuit. 250 National record holder John Roberts is not in the entry and 125 Gearbox record holder Russell Jamieson has since graduated to the 250 International class.

Lap records 2.1 kilometre circuit:
250 International: 0:58.4035 - Warren McIlveen (Stockman MR2 Honda)
250 National: 1:01.2349 - John Roberts (Stockman MR2 Kawasaki)
125 Gearbox: 1:02.0020 - Russell Jamieson (Stockman Laydown Honda)
