Southern Star Series, Round 4by Geoff Salmon WARWICK, 12TH SEPTEMBER 2010 The Fourth round of the successful Southern Star Series took place under perfect weather conditions at Warwick Kart Club with an attendance of 131 competitors who enjoyed not only the weather, but the new track extensions at Warwick. The new track now measures 1000 metres and adds approximately 13 seconds to the lap times. No one was complaining, the weekend actually started at 3.30PM on Saturday afternoon with the qualifying sessions for the Series Classes and the first to impress was a young man James Machen (89) who decided to relinquish the restraints of the Junior Max Class and move up to Rotax Light, (19 entries) and what a move it turned out to be, fastest qualifier in his first session in the class. A time of 43.329 seconds to top the list, with Tyler Greenbury (97) taking second fastest just .008 of a second behind young Machen, Wow, Rotax Light drivers beware; the juniors are here to be competitive.
Third fastest was Damian Ward (7), not that much older, but certainly an old hand in terms of experience in the Rotax Light Class, with a 43.493 second lap, the top ten drivers all in the 43 second bracket, a difference of just 0.639 seconds first to tenth. The overall results 1st Tyler Greenbury (97) 2nd Troy Bretherton(6) and 3rd Scott Sorensen (12). Rotax Heavy (just 10 entries) and Brendan Nelson (70) continued his good form with a 44.307 second lap to secure P1 for the first two heats of racing. Local driver Brett Sinkins (12) was second quickest with a 44.363 second lap, just .067 between the first two, to start on the front row. Jonathon Dwyer (50) from Lismore who continues his good form through out the Series placed P3 with a 44.455 second lap. The first three with just 0.148 guaranteeing a great battle was in store for all concerned. After some great action throughout the day the Overall results 1st Brendan Nelson (70) 2nd Jonathon Dwyer (50) and 3rd Brett Sinkins (12). Not to be left out Clubman Light (17 entries) and Brooke Topp poled the session with a 45.111 second lap just .006 of a second separating Series Favorite Ben Stewart for P2 with a 45.117 second lap. P3 went too the ever improving Peter Nolloth with a 45.268 second lap, just 0.466 of a second separating the first three. Again after some great racing the final results were 1st Tyler Greenbury (97) 2nd Ben Stewart (48) and 3rd Peter Nolloth. JMAX was a little underdone as far as entries (just 8) with Lucas Ward (3) polling with an impressive 43.776 second lap from Jai Olsen (22) with a 43.786, just 0.01 seconds separating for the front row, P3 went to the only young lady racing Renee Gracie with a 44..013 second lap. Renee, under the tutorage of Ben George, is improving on every outing. The Overall results taking into account the new track configuration: 1st Lucas Ward (3) 2nd Ashlon Gardner (2) and 3rd Jack Wood (50).
Clubman Heavy was intense with 11 entries and some great names doing battle over the new 1000 metre circuit. James Greenwood (12) taking the top spot with a 45.863 second lap from Qld State Title holder Shay Mayes (16) on a 45.954 second lap just 0.091 of a second separating these two very competent drivers, with Mathew Goddard (9) on a 46.011 second lap to be in P3. After a battle that was finalized at the hairpin on the last lap of the final seeing both Brendan Nelson (70) and Shay Mayes (16) take each other out the final results finished thusly: 1st James Greenwood 2nd Mathew Goddard and 3rd Klinton Hancey.
