Kostecki Trio Ready For WA State Titles

AKA press release

With three children under the age of 13, Dianella’s (Perth, WA) Steve Kostecki is kept busy on the weekend, but unlike many parents who trudge from junior football to junior soccer followed by junior netball, his children all share the same passion for the same sport – karting.

Next weekend (October 1-3) the Kostecki youngsters will be competing for state honours during the KTEQ Rentals Western Australian State Championships at the Cockburn International Karting Raceway in Henderson.

“For almost three years we’ve been racing karts and it’s something that we can all enjoy together,” said Kostecki.

“One of the best things about it is that both of my boys and my daughter can race at the same event, I have although been lucky enough not to have them race all in the same class due to the difference in age but that will change as they get older.

“I already get nervous watching them race but to see them all in the one race I think it could be too much.”

Steve says that his two youngest children, Jake (10) and Kurt (12) live and breath the sport and are always aiming for the victory while for Mikayla (13) it’s more simply for the fun.

“The sport has brought us closer as a family but it has also brought the competitive streak out in the boys,” said Steve.

“They just love their racing, whether it is them racing or watching Formula One or NASCAR they are always right into it.

“At the same time Mikayla enjoys her racing but it is more of a social thing for her, she enjoys the racing but then also loves hanging out with friends at the track.”

While winning makes the sport even more enjoyable Kostecki believes the lessons learnt by his youngsters while racing will hold them in good stead for the future.

“While they might not turn out to be the next Mark Webber or Daniel Ricciardo I’m very confident that they will become better people from the lessons they have leant in karting,” said Kostecki.

“Already I have seen their school grades pick up due to the discipline required from the sport and the fact that they know if their school grades drop then the karting will stop – it’s a powerful tool when you look at it that way.

“The most valuable lessons though I think will come when they get their road licences in a few years time. They will know where their limits are and also have a better awareness of what is around them and the consequences of their actions.”

Kurt, who won the Northern Territory State Championships earlier this year, will start as one of the favourites in the Rookies (10 – 12 years old) category this weekend while Jake will compete in the Midgets category (7 – 10 years old). Mikayla will race in the Junior National Light category (12 – 15 years old).

All three compete aboard a European-made Kosmic kart supported by Alloy Steel and Kostecki Race Engines.

Qualifying for the state championships will begin next Friday (October 1) ahead of the heat races on Saturday (October 2) and the championship finals on Sunday (October 3).
