6th Annual Nepean Nationals

press release

The 6th annual Wescranes Nepean Nationals were run on Sunday in some unseasonably 30 degree spring weather. However, it was nowhere near as hot as the on track action as 74 drivers tackled the testing track and really turned it on for the crowd that had ventured out to watch.

The Clubman Light field had 19 entries and the racing was very cut throat. Heat wins went to Jason Woodward in the first, David Boyd took out the 2nd and 3rd heat and Michael Jordan won the feature. When the points were tallied it was 1st place – Michael Jordan, 2nd place – Lady racer Jade Pollock and 3rd place – David Boyd.

The KT Modified Heavy class was next on track  and Wayne Baines won the 3 heats with  Cameron Coghlan taking the feature race victory. The day ended with 1st place – Wayne Baines, 2nd place – Cameron Coghlan and 3rd place – John Watton.

KT Modified Light followed next and the heat wins went to Greg Coghlan in heat 1 and 3, heat 2 was won by Nathan Bailey and he also took the feature race. The podium placing finished 1st place - Nathan Bailey, 2nd place – Greg Coghlan and 3rd place – Tim Beattie.

The Mighty Midgets took to the track next and had a very healthy 15 kart field. The driving displayed by all the children was first class and a pleasure to watch. Heat wins through the day went to Kaidon Brown in heat 1 with Taylor Coghlan winning heats 2 and 3. The feature was won by Kaidon and the final overall placings were 1st place – Kaidon Brown, 2nd place- Taylor Coghlan and 3rd place first time podium placing for Conner Moreau.

The premier class, the Formula 100s, were next out and whilst the numbers are not up in this class the level of racing certainly is. During the day heat wins went to Sean Mayo in heats 1 and 3 with Jonathon Bright taking the honours in heat 2 and the feature. However Jonathon’s first heat DNF would see the podium look this way: 1st place – Sean Mayo, 2nd place – David Brett and 3rd place  - new driver to the class, Luke Storey.

Another big 13 kart field of Juniors were out to impress next and finishing races would be the key to victory during the day. Heat wins went to Katelyn Hickey in heat 1, heats 2 and 3 were won by Nathan Camilleri and Lindsay Jones would go on to take the feature race win. The final placings for the day were 1st place – Nathan Camilleri, 2nd place – Reagan Angel, 3rd place – Katelyn Hickey.

The last class to race on the day was Clubman Heavy. Heats wins were by James Camilleri in heat 1, Tim Baker in heat 2, David Cochran in heat 3 and Wayne Baines would win the feature. The action in heat 2 saw James Camilleri get upside down in turn 1 after coming together with Les Green. Once all the dust settled the final class placings were 1st place – David Cochran, 2nd place- Wayne Baines, 3rd place – Tim Baker.

In the Premier League, courteousy of playing their Joker, the Benson Bandits again took top honours on the day. However the interest now is with second place as The Destorya’s have pulled up to within 2 points of the Big 1 Racing team. All focus will be on the last round in November.

Other award winner on the day were:

  • The Ontrack Automotive hard luck award – Jason Richards
  • The Stillshots Art Of Speedway Racing award – Mitchell Pyne
  • The Highest overall points scorer – Michael Jordan

So another great day is in the books and again the atmosphere and friendship around the club was evident as a lot of families stayed and socialised for a couple of hours after everything was run and won .

The next  Ontrack day for the club is a practice fun day on the 17th of October and then the grand final meeting on the 21st of November .
