AKA Addendum #30 - Tyre Treatment

The AKA has issued an addendum, effective immediately, regarding detection of tyre treatment. The rule now reads (new bits in red);

23.03 Tyre Treatment:

1. It is not permissible to tamper with any tyre, to alter its hardness, construction or composition with any method or agent including the use of an electric heat gun.

2. Checking of Tyres:

(a) Approved measuring instrument may be used for checking tyres for illegal agents/solvents and for shore hardness.

(b) A photo ionisation detector (PID) and a durometer are approved measuring instruments for checking tyres for illegal agents/solvents and shore hardness.

(c) A photo ionisation detector (PID) with a calibration certificate for isobutylene at 100ppm, issued in the preceeding 12 months, may be used for testing for chemical treatment of tyres.

(d) It will be deemed evidence of chemical treatment if either of the following occurs;

1) A reading greater than 5ppm on a PID, with the sampling probe within 5mm of any part of the tyre or tread, where the reading is more than 50% greater than the average readings found on tyres from other competitors in the race.

2) A reading greater than 250ppm on a PID, when sampling the air expelled from the tyre via the tyre valve, where the reading is more than 50% greater than the average readings found on tyres from other competitors in the race.

(e) If chemical treatment of tyres is established by either of the above methods, the competitor will be automatically excluded from the race meeting and their AKA licence fully suspended for 12 months. This decision and penalty is non-appealable.
