Shawn Sharkey Readies For 2011 Season

press release

After a successful 2010 racing season, SCS Racing pilot Shawn Sharkey will move to the senior ranks and challenge for multiple championships in 2011. While little has changed in his racing program, Sharkey will continue aboard a Merlin chassis tuned by Wesley Boswell at several high profile series and events across the country.

Already kicking of the 2011 season, Sharkey competed in the World Karting Association (WKA) Manufacturer’s Cup program over the holidays in Daytona Beach, Florida. Continuing his support of the series, Sharkey will contest the remaining four events doing battle in both the talent filled TaG 1 and TaG 2 classes as well as WKA’s Leopard only division. Working with Merlin importer FMS Racing and California based P1 Engines, Sharkey will look to gain experience and race wins in his senior rookie year.

“I am excited to move to the senior classes for 2011,” expressed Shawn Sharkey. “When I raced junior, I always watched the seniors compete. Most of the time, the racing was close and I was in awe of their skills and driving. I finally get to compete against these guys and hope that I am able to come out on top when the checkered flag has flown.”

Not only will Sharkey compete in WKA action, he will also do battle in the Rotax Senior class at the Florida Winter Tour. Utilizing an Ocala Gran Prix prepared motor, Sharkey will contest all three rounds beginning with the opening event in two weeks time at the Orlando Kart Center. Competing in some senior events last season in the Pro Rotax division, the talented 16-year-old knows what to expect in the sixty plus kart fields.

Sharkey continued, “The Winter Tour is truly an international program. People come from all over the world to compete in Florida. Just by the rumors I am hearing, the 2011 series is going to be the most competitive one yet.”

Looking to fill out his schedule a little more, Sharkey will also compete in the TaG divisions at the Superkarts! USA (SKUSA) Pro Tour. Competing at the Spring, Summer and SuperNationals, the P1 Engines powered Merlin driver will look to challenge for the coveted #1 Pro Tour plate that distinguishes the series champion.

Just as last season, the New Jersey area resident will compete in select special events across the country. First on the docket will be the United States Rotax Grand Nationals in Tooele, Utah as Sharkey will look to claim a spot on Team USA for the 2011 Rotax World Finals. Later on that year, Sharkey will travel to Rock Island, Illinois for his second career Rock Island Grand Prix in the world’s most prestigious street race.

“I learned a lot in 2010 and hope I can convey that knowledge into strong results in 2011,” claimed Sharkey. “Along with all the racing that we have planned, we have also put in place a pretty intensive test program to help ensure we are at the top of our game before heading to these events.”

Shawn would like to thank his current supporters: Franklin Motorsports, Merlin Chassis, Team FMS, SCS Racing, P1 Engines, Grand Products, Oncology Services International, On Track Promotions and his tuners Wesley Boswell and Lynn Haddock.
