Mawson Books Ticket to Rotax World Final

press release

A come-from-behind win at the weekend’s Rotax Pro Tour Round at Port Macquarie, NSW will see Australian Karting Star, Joseph Mawson headed to Dubai to represent his country at the Rotax World Finals. The win means Joey has now clinched the opening three rounds of the series for the 2011 Pro Tour.

Following the announcement at the start of the season of Mawson being one of the ‘Fujitsu Cool Driver’s’, this is yet another jewel in the crown for the 15 year old who continues to grow from strength to strength.

Joey was on the pace early at the NSW track, grabbing pole on a drying track in Q1, before being out qualified by Pierce Lehane in Q2, after completing few laps due to the rapidly changing weather conditions.

For Heat 1, the team opted to place a big sprocket on the Kart, unfortunately reducing his straight line speed; yet, Mawson’s persistence saw him maintain 2nd by the end.

An unfortunate mistake in Heat 2, after sitting in 2nd, saw Joseph drop to 13th, before utter determination lead to him being propelled back up to 6th by race end. Heat 3, and Joey continued with his resurgence, completing the session in 2nd, where he sat for the entire race.

For the pre-final, a direct correlation between the willpower of Joey, combined with Kart pace, saw him fly onto the tail of Pierce Lehane, who, up until then, was by far the one to beat for the weekend. Eventually finishing 2nd, it set Mawson up for a thrilling Final.

It was simply a textbook run for Joey Mawson in the Final, where he won the start, and lead until the finish. With Lehane on his tail for the opening 12 laps, Mawson found that extra edge, and surpassed what was first thought possible, to see him secure the concluding race, and take out the round.

"It was great to breakthrough and win the final, especially when i had Pierce on my tail for so long. I was driving 120% to ensure that i could keep him behind,” said Mawson following the meeting.
