British Super One Rotax Series, Round 4

from Graham Smith

Three double winners bagged the full quota of points on offer, the other two classes no less hard-fought with the occasional rain shower for an extra challenge.  The series trekked to its most northerly venue, the twisty Larkhall sub 40 second lap Scottish track.  Ross Gunn, David Griffiths and Nathan Harrison were the MiniMax, Max 177 and Junior Max winners whilst Steven Prentice and Jack Young shared Honda wins, whilst Andy King and Ed Brand took Max honours.

MiniMax

Ross Gunn showed his pace all the way from timed qualifying, leading Ben Hingeley and Harry Webb in that, and taking the second heat whilst Luke Knott won the first with Gunn failing to finish the first lap.  Hingeley led the first final starts, the first attempt quickly stopped to attend to Chinese driver Zhou Guan Yu’s crash, and luckily he walked away.  Webb thrust his kart ahead, whilst Jack Bartholomew leapfrogged Knott.  Mitchell and Webb continued to trade the lead, Hingeley and Knott also having a quick exchange.  Then Hingeley collided with Barthomolew and Philip Rawson, and collected an exclusion later.  Gunn had reached the lead group, carving through to the front to make a break over Knott and Mitchell with Webb fiercely defending fourth from a long train of karts.  In the second final, Gunn led all the way with Mitchell on his tail, but a late race challenge was thwarted when an errant backmarker got between them.  Knott took a lonely third whilst Josh White found a way past Webb for fifth.  Hingeley stormed up to seventh from the back.

Final 1: 1 Ross Gunn (Tonykart) 24 laps in 16m14.18s (39.80mph); 2 Luke Knott (Tonykart) +01.71s; 3 Jack Mitchell (Tonykart); 4 Harry Webb (Tonykart); 5 Connor Mills (Alonso); 6 Josh White (Tonykart). Fastest lap Gunn 0.39.80s.
Final 2: 1 Gunn 24 laps in 16m05.38s (47.28mph); 2 Mitchell +00.39s; 3 Knott; 4 White; 5 Webb; 6 Josh Price (Tonykart).

Max 177

Tom Holland claimed fastest in timed qualifying but Lucas Orrock had his customary heat wins where Colin Davis looked pacey, but David Griffiths a little less so.  Orrock had a handy lead in the first final with Griffiths slicing past Holland at the top of the rear straight, Davis some way back but reeling in and taking Holland.  Then the rain came on, with Orrock sliding wide at turn one, letting Griffiths go into the lead, then again falling off at the hairpin for fourth behind David and Tom Pyttlik with Holland fifth.  For the second final, Griffiths was trying to control the rapidly approaching Davis and Orrock, until Orrock made a late lunge whacking hard into Davis and later excluded.  That took the pressure off Griffiths, Holland second on the track but also excluded so Scott Clee and David Rendall inherited the podium places.

Final 1: 1 David Griffiths (GMS) 23 laps in 15m59.56s (45.58mph); 2 Colin Davis (Tonykart) +04.82s; 3 Tom Pyttlik (Alonso); 4 Lucas Orrock (Kosmic); 5 Tom Holland (Alonso); 6 David Rendall (Octane).
Final 2: 1 Griffiths 25 laps in 16m16.49s (48.69mph); 2 Scott Clee (Kosmic) +06.89s; 3 Rendall; 4 Pyttlik; 5 Carl Churchill (Tonykart); 6 James Darch (Alonso).

Honda Cadet

Sandy Mitchell topped timed qualifying but failed to convert his pole to a heat win, these going to Jack McCarthy and Steven Prentice.  In the first of two tremendously exciting finals, Prentice and Jack Young eventually broke clear of a seven kart train contesting third place.  That train caught the leaders and Prentice was shuffled down the order on the last lap only for a red flag to stop the race, so he survived in first over McCarthy, Kyle Pettricca and Luke Wooder.  Battling with Young, Wooder, Pettricca and Felix Meek, Wooder broke away only for the rest to draft back up on him once more.  Young led into the last lap whilst Prentice was hung out to dry, falling to eighth, as Wooder and Pettricca claimed the podium places behind Young.

Final 1: 1 Steven Prentice (Project One) 18 laps in 13m43.37s (41.57mph); 2 Jack McCarthy (Project One) +00.07s; 3 Kyle Petricca (Project One); 4 Luke Wooder (Project One); 5 Jack Young (Project One); 6 Sandy Mitchell (Project One).
Final 2: 1 Young 21 laps in 16m01.22s (41.55mph); 2 Wooder +00.16s; 3 Petricca; 4 Ben Thompson (Project One); 5 Mitchell; 6 McCarthy.

Junior Max

Although James Singleton took fastest qualifying lap, Jack Barlow won two heats to Nathan Harrison’s and Ryan Morgan’s one each.  Barlow was on pole for the first final but as the karts emerged all on slicks the rain came once more and he was caught out.  Sliding off the track and missing a loop automatically gave him a 15s penalty although he slotted in behind winner Harrison.  So Raoul Hyman mastered the tricky conditions, leapfrogging from 13th to become second over Oliver Myers.  In the second final, Harrison led all the way with Sam Ward and Myers fighting behind.  When Myers tried to pass, it slowed them down enough for Barlow to slip into second, he having stormed through from his 12th places start.

Final 1: 1 Nathan Harrison (Tonykart) 23 laps in 16m13.86s (44.91mph); 2 Raoul Hyman (Alonso) +05.49s; 3 Oliver Myers (Tonykart); 4 Sam Ward (Kosmic); 5 Ryan Norris (PCR); 6 Ryan Morgan (Alonso).
Final 2: 1 Harrison 24 laps in 15m41.14s (48.49mph); 2 Barlow +00.25s; 3 Ward; 4 Myers; 5 Morgan; 6 Levi Coombs (Tonykart).

Senior Max

Sean Babington just pipped Jack Marshall for the fastest in timed qualifying but Andy King was well on form to take two heats to Edward Brand’s one.  Setting off from pole ahead of Barrie Pullinger, Charlie Eastwood and Jack Marshall, King kept them all at bay whilst the track was neutralised with full course yellow to repair barriers.  John Stewart had been penalised for tagging another kart in timed qualifying so had to carve through from grid nine to pip King at the top of the hill.  But King returned the favour for the win, with Brand third.  For the second final, King had to give best to Stewart and Brand, after the first start was abandoned due to a massive first corner pile-up.  Blamed for that, Pullinger was later excluded.  The Chinese driver Ma Qing Hua from Shanghai was having his first UK kart race.  The prospective GP2 driver came in 23rd.  As the second final progressed, Brand made his move on Stewart for the win, King unable to fight back from a still close third, Pullinger a distant fourth on the track, but Marshall inheriting that position.

Final 1: 1 Andy King (CRG) 23 laps in 16m00.29s (45.55mph); 2 John Stewart (Tonykart) +00.20s; 3 Edward Brand (Tonykart); 4 Barrie Pullinger (Tonykart); 5 Jack Marshall (Tonykart); 6 Charlie Eastwood (Kosmic).
Final 2: 1 Brand 25 laps in 15m55.20s (49.77mph); 2 Stewart +00.39s; 3 King; 4 Marshall; 5 Sean Babington (Alonso); 6 Ross Wylie (FA Kart).
